All these cars I've owned have had one thing in common. Air-cooled Beetle, Land Rover series 3, Discovery series 1, Mk1 MX-5, Mk1 MR2, even when behind the wheel of my old Nova SR, other drivers would raise a finger off they wheel, wave, or flash lights (that one is especially true of the pop-up light cars!). And that doesn't even take into account the universal "biker's nod". In fact for a while I'd only really drive a "wavey" car that was clearly an enthusiast's marque, wherever that stood in the desirability scale.
Having recently joined the ranks of Porsche owners with a tidy 986 as a weekend/station run car, I was really looking forward to that driving camaraderie again after many successive years of diesel rep-mobiles. However, although I got a very enthusiastic wave from a very nice 997 today, other Porsche drivers look at me like I'm mad.
Feeling deflated, my poor little fingers are starting to stay glued to the steering wheel in case of huge embarrassment. So what's the story, is it considered wierd to wave to other drivers, are Porsches "too cool" for waving, or has the internet chat room replaced that on the road friendliness?

With the Box you should get the odd wave, usually from other 986 owners, but as a rule there are a lot of Porsche owners who are simply uninterested in the car, only the image, 50% of which they don't get anyway.
If you have a 986 and want waves drive it in the winter with the roof down. Even people who would normally be doing the small willy thing seem to raise a smile then!
Or get a 968CS - then when they wave they use more than 2 fingers (most the time)

Folk have been lamenting the demise of 'the wave' for longer than I have had mine (12 yrs) as a sign that the Company had entered the mass market and the enthusiast owner base diminished. Out here in Switzerland, you can pay a nominal sum and choose an 'interesting' number and once you have it, you tend to keep the same physical number plates with you when you change cars (as long as you dont move canton/county!). Thus I notice the guys and gals driving modern Porsche's with licene plates that feature the older numbers such as 911, 964, 986, 993 etc. and you are almost guaranteed a wave from one of them!

You raise a good point. When I had my 'dub, it wasn't a wave, it was the old thumb out, pinkie out "W" gesture in a surfer cool kinda way, with an obvious nod to the W part of the brand logo. A while back I was out in my pork and waved at a guy in a Boxster.....he gave me the finger

Perhaps I need to let go of the wheel and do some Stuttgart crest antlers out the top of my head, accompanied by the correct "rutting stag" sound effects? Roof down obviously...
3.5 years of Porsche ownership, I got one wave in the UK, from a Cayman S driver in the Cotswolds (I think he waved, he was fairly flying along). Two days in France, every single Porsche owner waved, and one pulled over to photograph our two cars together. Being English is the new being French.

In the heady days of the 'it' crowd buying their Tuscan, without knowing much more than that it was harder to find a service center than for their Ferpor Merbm, you could see them actively sunb owners of 'lesser' models.
