996T: Cheapest way to more noise?

I said I wouldnt do this, I lasted 4 months. :roflmao:

I need more sound from this car. It does sound nice sometimes - on start up from cold, at full gas if the wind is blowing in the right direction, but other times I feel like it is powered by a small swarm of polite bees. I don't want it to scare children, but I want to be able to hear where the engine is so I can at least heel and toe..

I come from planet 964, where for £100 you can bypass either the secondary silencer or the cat and make it sound great in 30 minutes...but I know a nice exhaust sound is a bigger challenge with Turbos in general, and that 'more' noise doesnt necessarily mean 'nice' noise.

But are there any cheap fixes/bypasses for me to try, or are the options all really going to be 4 figures?

I have read about a hack to the standard 996 turbo exhaust using a drill. Search on Google for modified oem 996tt muffler and you will find some threads on a number of US sites.

Thanks, I think I have just stumbled onto it. You drill a hole with a holesaw in the last section before the tailpipes, both sides.

Sounds just what I need, seriously considering doing this, and keeping the drilled out plates so they can be fitted back on if needed.

isnt a hole in the exhaust (apart from the one at the end) an MOT fail? Hence keeping the plates I suppose.

Surely someone like larini do an exhaust?

I think if it is after the final silencer it is OK? Anyway I had in mind modifying the resmaining plate so it would bolt back on (like torsion bar cover plates do). If I make it look professional hopefully the MOT man would think it was a 'feature'.

Plenty of aftermarket suppliers will furnish me with a more noisey 996TT exhaust for a couple of grand, I just don't want to spend much brass (especially as it is never going to sound as good as a nat asp flat 6).

Luckily I have my 964, which has both cat and 2ry bypass, for that sort of nonsense. The 996T is more for the school run than being fully committed through Flugplatz, so GT3 not required!

Well as much i love the sound of a GT3 at 8k RPM having just owned one, my present car a Turbo though it certainly doesn't sound as good as its NA little brother it sounds bloody great with the Miltek system very low and purposeful, massive improvement on standard.

It's very droney. I have a Carnewal on my turbo. 100 cell cats and the hole mod to a std exhaust. It's not great.
