996 key is doing my swede in.
Discussion
Hi chaps hopefully someone can help.
My remote central locking stopped working, light flashes but doesn't unlock. Tried new battery, tried reversing the polarity, but nothing.
Git the spare which looks just the same as the other key, and same thing. Light blinks but not locking or unlocking.
Y
Now the really confusing bit. One key will unlock all the doors and petrol flap etc, but the other key only unlocks the drivers door and I have to jump in quickly and turn on the engine before the alarm goes off! They both look like identical keys, why would one do something different from another?!?

This would indicate that the issue is with the car, not the key.Git the spare which looks just the same as the other key, and same thing. Light blinks but not locking or unlocking.

Don't get this, do they or don't they work? Or do you mean using the key in the lock, mechanically? Or do you mean before they stopped working?PorscheFreak said:
Sorry using the key in the lock. One key opens everything with one turn. The other only unlocks the drivers door and I have to turn the engine over pretty quick else the alarm goes off!
They must have a different cut?But odd, this must mean that there is a different setup within the door lock.
Some cars (non P) come with valet keys that allow for one to supply a key to a parker, a common thing in the US at hotels etc, this key does not open the trunk, glovebox, etc, is just enough to permit the parker to open the car and drive off. My Turbo's driver side lock has little other than microswitches that dictate what will happen globally once the key is turned, there is not, as far as I can tell, any provision for selective unlocking depending on the key used.
The door lock barrel has a rod that connects to the actual door lock, operating the key can only result in the rod rotating that simply activates the microswitches in the lock. There is no option, if the rod rotates, the switch/es operate.
The only possible thing I can think of that I have not studied at all is that perhaps a partial rotation may result perhaps in (say) one MS being "on" while the other is still "on" too, whereas a full rotation gives "on" and "off". Just a theory and an an example as to the possible operation, I have not looked into this at all even though I have spent a day examining the insides of the lock and testing the microswitches! And re-assembled, so sorry can't do anything now.
In any case if you do actually have a "valet" key if they exist then logic would dictate that this would not remotely open up the entire vehicle (perhaps it has no remote facility at all??) so to further confound matters perhaps it is the original main key that is fekked and not the car.
If you have a laptop running XP (still to test on Win8, installed yesterday) buy a Chinese Ebay Durametric kit clone with cable, very inexpensive, you can pull some error codes and this will give you a far better idea what is going on.

At least on my turbo, this is what happens when it goes into sleep mode (i.e. when I haven't used it for more than 5 days). The key mechanically opens the drivers door (but everything else stays locked) and the ignition has to be switched on within 30s to prevent the alarm sounding.I'm not sure how your two keys can be behaving differently though. It sounds like the car is behaving like it's in sleep mode for one of them, and not the other. Very odd.

I have the exact same problem but have just lived with it now for a few months. I would be very grateful to hear if you find out what the problem is. I tried all the little tricks as well to no avail. I guess I just need to pop down to the OPC with £200 to make the problem disappear.

Might be better off going to a specialist with half the cash!Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
