Dealer reaction to offers
Discussion
I viewed a car (a tidy IB 911 yesterday at a well respected indi dealer) for a friend before he made the 300 mile trip today. Car was good, a few inaccuracies in the advert but not a show stopper. Car was priced at 30k. Decent private examples priced from 24k and up.
Friend offered 28.5k today after test drive and offered to leave a 1k cash deposit. Immediately turned down. He made a last offer of 29k and they said no. He walked.
I generally average about 90-95% when buying from a dealer. Is this a mark of how strong the air cooled market is?

It has stopped him, he walked and went back to London!
It would have stopped me too.
In all my life I've only ever had one dealer stand firm on an asking price of a used car. I made a final offer and said if they didn't accept then and there I would drop the offer by 1k if they called me back the next day and a further 1k for every further call. I walked and they never called. Yes I 'lost' a car I wanted by a measly grand but I kept to my word and felt good.

I think most would work on a cars/whatever worth, not if you got money off to make you feel good or not.
I thought the DFS model was transparent enough for most to realise this, maybe not
I thought a 97% offer on pretty much anything is not bad, especially when someone is standing in front of you with cash (and I do mean cash).I thought the DFS model was transparent enough for most to realise this, maybe not

You also can't necessarily expect to carve something off the price just for the sake of it. If the car was priced wrongly, that's different.
It's happened to us with a house. A viewer wanted something off just because that's how he always worked, so we sold that afternoon to someone else for the asking price.

He found and wants a car that is 300 miles away and is expecting to dictate how much he pays for it!!
I can't quite tell if you're being serious or not.Your mate made a 300 mile trip then walked over a grand?
It smacks of cutting off one's nose to spite the face
I am fully with you on never paying sticker price but you have to put it in context
Buying a Focus, then hammer the dealer
Buying a classic is a little different. The car sounds price accurately and if your mate wants it he should pay what he thinks it's worth, not walk over a small discount out of principle....
In essence he has walked from a perfectly good car for no reason. Can he find another equivalent?
I'm on blackberry so struggling with multiple quotes now
The reason I suggested he offered lower was that, imo, the car was priced right for one where absolutely everything being right. It wasn't. It was a 1988 car with "a full service history from new."
It did but it had a 10 year gap (2000-2010) with zero receipts, zero info and a single oil/filter change at a general dogsbody garage.

Just buy a 'decent private example' at 24k...Friend offered 28.5k today after test drive and offered to leave a 1k cash deposit. Immediately turned down. He made a last offer of 29k and they said no. He walked.

It sounds as if he's had a lucky escape, I would walk full stop unless the car had done no miles & had been laid up in storage. I know a dealer not too far from you who would not really negotiate, £500 was the max. But I think if I really wanted the car then at this price point £1k is a bit daft to walk from.

This absolutely and definitely not too money for that gap. Although given that this is 4 tears ago if it had subsequently gad plenty of work then fine.

Translation please! I know a dealer not too far from you who would not really negotiate, £500 was the max. But I think if I really wanted the car then at this price point £1k is a bit daft to walk from.

When you go to a dealer to buy a car, you are not doing him a favour by buying it. His stock will sell regardless to the next person. Ok, so he may want somethimg shifted or he may want to top his figures up for a particular period but with certain cars, certain margins, certain markets there might be plenty of reasons for him to try and get asking price. I work in retail and i personally cant bear this ethos of a mandatory discount like its a god given right. Try your luck for sure but its not de rigeur by any means and if you really want somethimg in life, just f#%#* buy it.
That said, 10 year gap sucks. Sounds like it was the best rejection he ever got.
