Prepararion for Sale of 996tt
Discussion
I'm thinking of selling my 996tt later this summer. I've owned it for 3 years and am going over it to make sure that it isn't let down by minor niggles. However I've been staring at the PCM 2. It works OK but is really pretty poor by modern standards. I'm not normally into any kind of non-standard mods but a recent post reminded me that there are a number of quality double din units that would look fine and offer much better functionality. I probably would need to spend upwards of £800.
My question is, would it be wortwhile?

I certainly wouldn't pay any more, and I'd be more likely to pass your car by should I not like the upgrade - if anything it's a reason to subjectively mark a car down.
Spend the money on wheel refurbs, paint, mechanicals, a good valet, replacing any damaged trim, fresh tyres / brakes (if needed) etc.

As above. I wouldn't attach any value to an aftermarket stereo. In fact I would probably prefer the PCM2 as I prefer the originality (despite the fact it's a bit crap!) I'd prefer to do any mods myself and then put the original back in come resale time. Spend the money on mechanicals.

imv, I would leave as standard. Better to spend on items that catch the eye, if required ie, wheel refurb and new rubber if requiredMy question is, would it be wortwhile?

The new buyer will probably expect too spend c. £5k on your car to bring it up to scratch.
I don't get that logic. The OP sounds like someone who potentially looked after and kept the car at a decent standard. Why would any potential buyer have 5k set aside to make a car good? If it's a dog it should be priced and bought accordingly negating any additional 5k spend. Agree with leave as is though. If you must spend 800 then make sure service and/or rubber is good.

Me neither. If I thought a car required that kind of money to bring up to spec I'd discount my offer by that much, or more. One wants to avoid paying excellent money for a car that is not in excellent condition.Agree with leave as is though. If you must spend 800 then make sure service and/or rubber is good.
I agree with others that any stereo upgrade will not give the seller a return on his "investment".
Generally, -- this is directed to the OP -- be sure the car requires no service. You can use this to help sell the car by stressing the car is ready to hit the road and will require no scheduled services for thousands and thousands of miles and months and months. The last thing a used car buyer wants to face is having after buying a used car to then have to spend even more money for services.
'course, the seller can show he has kept the servicing up to date and if any non-service issues have come up he has had those addressed as well. This shows he "loved" the car and that counts for something to a prospective buyer.
I'd be pretty shocked if it needed £5k worth of work! I had the full main dealer service done, including plugs and brake fluid about a thousand miles ago, all brake calipers refubished and repainted, all brake pipes replaced.....there's more but my wife might log on and see see where my pocket money has gone.
If you are not of the disposition have it detailed. It can be amazing the difference between a car that is clean and one that is detailed. Remember with buying a Porsche you always have to compete with the dealer or specialist as they account for the additional price due to preparation, warranty and buying ease. If you can present a car to the equivalent standard (but no warranty) minimum 3 grand cheaper then it's a winner.
