997 turbo vs. SL55

The 996 turbo and SL55 were aimed at similar markets, but you're right - my conclusion is that they are rather different with areas of overlap...With that in mind, off I go to get the roof down and enjoy the sun - the one thing the 911 cannot compete with!

I actually thought Merc is more of a comprise as its only a 2 seater and for a P Cab you could add hard top.

The 2 smaller seats in the back do occasionally come in handy, but I am selling my 320d in favour of the SL so the rear seats aren't really needed.
I think the 997 (and 996) don't look very good with the hard tops, not to mention the extra room (I live in a flat for example, so wouldn't have anywhere to put the hardtop) and it's kida permanent too whereas the SL can be either with a moments notice. I think in this category the SL truly has the 911 trumped.
I would take the 911 over the SL for a fun and spirited drive anyday though.. although I must admit though that my drive this afternoon through London was far nicer in the SL than the Porsche though, but we were just creeping and cruising for 90% of the time.
But I'm in agreement - they were compared when released (996) but they are very different cars.
