993 Targe - Sell or keep
Discussion
Dear PH Massive (
)
I have a 993 Targa with 65k miles on the clock - a tip - in pretty blomin' good condition even if I say so myself. In the last three years, because of work pressure (I am in the military and always away), I have put a whole 500 miles on her and she just sits in the garage on a battery charger under a car cover. She gets a service every year (lovely clear unspoilt oil goes in and each year lovely clear oil is drained out) from that very fine chap Jon Mitchell.
So, we are moving house and I am wondering if I should sell her now and put a big dent in the new mortgage or hang on and continue to do almost no miles for a few more years (sadly) and then put a bigger dent in the mortgage. And that, fellow Porsche nuts, is the question. Will I put a bigger dent in the mortgage in a few years or does the massive think its value will go up or stay pretty level (and therefore in essence go down).
All ears.....
Thanks
PS. This is not a sneaky sales add and I am really not interested in any offers at this time thanks - just peoples honest opinions.

I vote to keep it. I used to spend weeks away from home for work and getting back in the driver's seat, even for a few miles made all the hard work worthwhile.
One of my favourite car memories is arriving back at City Airport stressed and tired from a week's work. My 964 targa was sitting there in the car park waiting for me. I took the roof off, the sun came out and within a mile I had a huge smile on my face with the flat six wailing and the wind in my hair.
Just try to put a few more miles on it if you can. They thrive on being used.

The key question is. At say 4% interest on your mortgage you can pretty much calculate your "opportunity costs" of keeping the money tied up in the car rather than pay down the mortgage. One thing is certain. The remaining debt on the mortgage will keep going up (if you add the interest payments) whereas the Porsche is a speculative investment. It probably won't go down but you are (probably) not going to see a 5 % pa return on the Porsche for perpetuity. Right now it does not cost you anything to hold it as an option, but once interest rates go up you will be better off paying down the mortgage. So my advice would be, hang on to it for now but at the next rate rise, sell it.

Its obvious that you are only interested in values, so I would sell it now whilst values are hot.
Yes, I do think it will increase over the next few years, but not by a great amount. And of course it will cost you circa 1k per year to keep it anyway.
Sell.

Take the money whilst the market is hot, no more maintenance costs and less mortgage to pay off.
