Retro Fit A/C - Old 911

Looking into the possibility of getting air conditioning installed into my car before going to Le Mans Classic in July.

Has anyone had this done? It's an 88 Carrera 3.2 backdated to 74 Carrera with a few mods.

Anywhere Midlands or Herts/Beds/Bucks area would be ideal.

I think Dom at SVP has done a few. Be around 5k all told though cost wise.

as above, really not cheap using the original set up. is it LHD or RHD?

there are a few after-market solutions from the US that utilise the smugglers box that i looked into but this was for a LHD car & i'm not 100% that they can be fitted on a RHD car.

It's right hand drive, have also spoken to a very helpful guy in Leicester who did say that retro-fitted A/C systems are not that effective, but would look into it to see if anything new had come on the market in the last couple of years.

I think at £5k.... unless it could freeze a bag of water in 30 seconds....it wouldn't be worth it...

OP, thanks for asking this question as I have been having the same thoughts for my 993 cab. The alternative is to sell it and buy one with air con ( I guess in 1994/5 people thought why have air con if you can open the roof....) but there aren't that many and I know mine and know the love and attention that has been lavished on it during my ownership. £5k is probably a bit much but I'd be happy to pay about £3k if I could get it looking like a factory fit.

Agreed! Hence I've asked if later 3.2s with wider vents can do without that add-on panel. One (of several) issues that prevent decent AC in an air cooled 911 is the small flow capability of the existing vents.

I think Cool It in Dorchester can do a factory-look retrofit on 964s and 993s.

It's not a huge difference from factory though-Porsche themselves came up with the same rather ugly solution-or Behr did anyways.

As I said above, it utilises the smugglers box which I didn't want to lose, but that's another story...

That actually looks just like the original Porsche aircon fitted to 911s forty years ago. So it does look very 'OE'

^^^what he said. We look after a 74 or 75 2.7 that has those factory vents, they are pretty awful so arent what you would expect as oe!
