Anyone got any experience of Cayenne Diesels as a used car proposition?
Looking at a tow car but needs to be reliable and not too thirsty!! It would sort of be a second car but I'd still like 30mpg in normal use. Doesn't need to have true mud plugging ability as the nearest to off road it will go is either the paddock at Cadwell Park or a caravan site. Don't need 7 seats but do need to be able to fit 2 large dogs in the boot space occasionally, too.
Options appear to be 2009 Land Rover Discovery, BMW X5 or a Cayenne, or similar. There appears to be a few available, all around 2009 and 45-50,000 miles and all at about £25k.
Personally, I'd prefer the Cayenne as at least it may handle without being too stodgy! Any experiences of buying a Cayenne second hand? Any experiences of running the early Diesels?

I can only offer opinion on a 2014 4.2V8 Diesel Cayenne S I have. Its on 21" wheels, and has air suspension. Looking at a tow car but needs to be reliable and not too thirsty!! Your first question was about economy - My average for the last 1000 miles is 30.5Mpg. On a brisk run on the motorway, it'll easily average 34+, and with many cold starts, and short runs of circa 40 miles briskly driven on A and B roads, it'll average 28-29ish. I have just come out of a 2013 X5 40d msport, and that averaged 27, and didn't have anywhere near the performance of the Cayenne.
Ride is terrific. with 3 damper settings, and a normal and reduced ride height setting, you'll find the type of ride that suits you. I use it in reduced ride height, and normal damping, and find it perfect for me. I haven't driven a steel sprung car to compare with though. Overall, I prefer the ride of the Cayenne to the X5. I also have a Merc GL350d, it does a great job of swallowing tons of children and stuff, but it wallows all over the place. Have also test driven RR, and RR Sport, and the ride of the Cayenne is leagues above all of these cars in my opinion.
Performance is staggering, I cant see why you want it to be any quicker..!
Sorry I cant offer opinion on the 3.0D which it seems you requested (I haven't driven one sorry), but all of the above will apply in terms of handling, with the exception of straight line performance. If anything, the 3.0D engine should be lighter over the front axle, so should improve handling possibly..?

Fully agree with the post above...Massive range on the 3.0, 800-900 Miles on a tank...The 4.2 has 9/10s performance of the Turbo, but 100% better on fuel.
