So various quotes from Micheldeva for full set of 4 new tyres for 996TT (inc fit / bal and track):

£613 - Pirelli P.Zero Asimetrico N3
£639 - Continental Sport N2
£660 - Bridgestone ????? N3
£738 - Michelin Pilot Sport N1

which should I opt for as a press on driver (no track days) who prioritises wet weather grip over dry ? I wouldn't mind less tyre noise too and I do fined the current Pirelis a little hard. Also what is the difference in the compounds N1 - N3 - does this mean they will wear differntly ?

Micheldever says the Bridgestones are proving popular at the moment - any experiences out there ?

Good question. I've always stuck to the Pirelli Assimetricos, as they were on the car when it was delivered. I think Getcarter experimented with tyres on his car before selling it.

The N numbers identify the release or version of the tyre. For example, a Bridgstone Potenza S02 N3 is the later version of the same tyre with a N2 annotation. There may be slight changes to the tread pattern but nothing very significant.

I have the SO2 N3's on my 993 turbo. Seem very good so far but took about 200 miles to bed in.

Pirelli PZero N3 - great dry, poor wet, ok wear, okay noise
Continental SportContact N2 - great dry, great wet, good wear, okay noise
Bridgestone S02A N3 - great dry, ok wet (but they get worse when they're half worn), poor wear, poor noise

The last time I replaced tyres on my 996TT, I went for the P Zeros again, - N4s on the front and N3s for the rear as the N4s weren’t available in the size at the time.

The N4s are mile better than the N3s IMHO, noticeable all round improvement.

I have heard though, that the Pilot Sport 2 is the best traction tyre, so I’m planning on these next time.

I have managed to find a very good deal on Yokhama AVS N1. for my current wheels
265/35/18
225/40/18
May go to 17 inch wheels later but this deal is too good to miss. I will get them and stick in teh garage.

Anyone got any opinion on these?

As for the N numbers on tyres. I seem to recal this is to do with the sidewall stiffness. or at least while researching beofore I got mine Im sure I found a site that stated this.

Yes it's complete rubbish ! As stated earlier in the thread it relates to updated versions/evolutions of the same basic tyre ie small differences in compounds or tread pattern etc.

No N # is a revision number (IE a new rubber compound / or tread pattern) apparently not to do with sport or comfort. Porsche re-validates the tyre as apropriate for their cars, if passed a new N number is alocated to t tyre type of a particualre manufacturer. Pirellie seem to be bringing out the most revisions since the P.Zero Rosso is avaible on n4 and most other manufacturers are on N2 or N3 as a maximum

Have a loot here Mytyres they are the cheapest place i've found for tyres, they also link to several ratings sites.
The AVS rate 3.3 out of 5.0(the lower no. the better) in 265/35/18 £165,20
The SO2's rate 2.2 (therfor a fair bit better than the AVS) £174,30

AVON ZZ3's scor well are cheaper BUT are not N rated............

I have found yokohama avs n1 2 x 225/40/18 + 2x 265/35/18 for £387.50

including Vat and shipping £464.26.

They say limited stock. Will phone up tomorrow and ask how many they have. let me know if anyones interested.

Thats not far off replacing 4 tyres on my integra would have cost.

Try grabbing a copy of the last couple of tyre tests in EVO mag - I think The Rosso Neros have won 2 years running.

Always thought it was too bad that Goodyear never made N rated Eagle F1s...

I have the same Yokohama AVS Sport on my 964. They were recommended to me as "very sticky" and they seem to hold true to that. They have a reputation for poor tread wear although I've found them to run reasonably quiet.

Given that they ARE a good price, a little less longevity seems to be a fair price to pay for staying on the road!!!

As stated by others, the N rating is merely a "revision number" and is requested by Porsche for tyres which they have tested and approved. There are subtle differences between N-rated tyres and non-N-rated in issues such as compound and structure. It has been mentioned before that there is some doubt whether an insurance company would consider a Porsche suitably road-worthy if it did not have N-rated tyres fitted. I'm doubtful.

So just got the Pirellis from Micheldeva. £650 the set including fit, bal, wheel clean and tracking.

Car feels better already and only done 2 miles.

The fitter commented that one of my fronts has been bent out of shape a tiny amount on the inner face. About 1/4 of a MM but this nowexplains the increasing shake I get from the steering wheel at speed.

Time for a new front aloy ?

My Evo VII came with AVS Sports when new. Gripped well, but wear was poor to say the least. Needed 4 new ones after 3,500 miles, and that included running it in.

Yoko AVS. Strange, isn't it. They were fantastic on my Audi V6, and crap on my 964 C4 -I couldn't wait to wear them out!!

I always thought P Zero's were good until I tried S02's......
