pcm problem - cutoff protection pcm temperature

Hi all. I have a 2005 carrera S. Having a problem with the PCM. It will turn on for around 20 seconds and then turn itself off. If I keep driving for a while it will eventually turn itself on again but will then turn off again after about 20 seconds... And that cycle continues.

Error message displayed on the pcm screen is 'Cutoff protection temperature PCM'.

I've tries holding down the three keys to reset the PCM and that hasn't worked. I've also tried starting the PCM with the nav disc removed and that didn't work either.

Does anyone know what to do?

I had exactly the same message while driving to Le Mans a few years ago. The outside temperature was 34degrees and the front boot was full of camping gear, some of which had blocked the DVD unit. It never happened again.

Had the car been sitting in direct sun? Is there anything blocking the Sat Nav system in the boot?

Thanks for the reply. There's hardly anything in the boot, only thing covering the nav unit is the 'door' panel that covers it.. So I assume that doesn't count...

The weather has been warm recently but I assume the car was designed for much warmer countries than the UK?

Does the nav unit have some sort of fan to keep it cooled? Could it be that that has stopped working?

In my case it was a definite case of over-heating. Once the unit had cooled it worked fine and I kept the car for four years and it never happened again. They test these cars in Death Valley at 50 degrees plus so I was still surprised...

Sorry I can't be more help. Maybe a friendly (!) OPC may help?

had similar issues

turned out to be a dodgy Nav disc causing the drive to overheat whilst constantly trying to read the disc

replaced with a new disc and the problem went away

thanks Markii... lets hope its something that simple.

Can I just buy any old nav disc, ie look on ebay for the most recent? Or do I need to match up a certain edition against the exact unit that i have in my car? If so, how do i find out the unit type thats in my car?

Hi there are two software options for 997/987,and if you install the wrong sat/nav disc it will cause software
conflict, put a diagnostic on it to confirm drive temp, I had a 987 with same issue.

Thanks CD, how do i do that? Take it to the Porsche center or can I access that info on the PCM somehow?

PCM target + actual: 04202JD1 / 3004

Nav system: (no target presumably because disc was removed?)
Navy target: 00174156/2704

Phone target+actual: 04464AD2/4604

Hi can you confirm exact year of your car because you could have model care A or B software,the pcm 2.1 model disc for model CARE B,this is the REPAIR KIT disc is part number 000.043.205.46.007.This is not a sat/nav disc its purely software.There is also a set procedure to make it install.
