Can anyone give me some advice on the best route to take. I have a 996 fitted with an Alpine head unit and standard speakers. I want a better sound and although the head unit is good it looks naff in the car. I would like something more in line with the cdr 22 Porsche head unit. Where should I spend the money...speakers or head unit and what should I expect to pay (small budget and I'm not a sound buff....my wife's Audi gives out a better sound!!)All help greatfully Received!

I recently updated my in car entertainment with a company called Prestige. (www.prestige-audio.co.uk) They are fantastic. I cannot speak highly enough about them. (I'm not affiliated with them in any way.)

You can spend as much or as little as you like with these guys or just give them a call for some advise. They are genuinely nice guys and very helpful.

Not sure where in the country you are, but these guys are based in Rickmansworth.

Dozer,

I seem to be travelling in the opposite direction to you. I am having the Porsche Hi-Fi pack stripped out and having a component system installed.

The standard CDR 22 head unit / amp / autochanger are pretty average in terms of sound quality.

A new Alpine CD / tuner / cassette head unit / Genesis amp / Alpine autochanger and JL Audio speakers and iRiver interface are being fitted starting tomorrow.

The Alpine can be switched to amber illumination to go with the dash.

I will let you know how it goes!

If you fancy increasing your budget a tad... check out Fred's 996TTx50... dual subs, tv screen, camera mount, rollcage, audio and visual power connections... the works!

Not to everyone's tastes but i would expect this setup would be near to the ultimate for Porsche audiophiles

Thank you. What sort of money do you think needs to be spent. I want a better head unit and certainly some more bass than the standard equipment offers. I don't bass box's etc....just a decent sound and a more intergrated (vsiually) head unit.
Regards

Just checked out you profile.....very good. Fred's 966 tt is stunning....it all makes me feel very amateurish!! I'm only playing around with a bit of music . You boy's are serious !! What's the crack (my Irish coming through!!) with the screen....is it a full satnav system? What sort of cost is that? I spoke to an independent dealer and they can fit a Becker system very close to an original PCM. Do you know anything about it?

Dozer,

The Porsche system is a Becker unit, so it would match visually, but it will sound just as average as the standard kit.

If the priority is to stay with the stock look, then Becker will be the right choice, but for better sound quality you will need to consider other alternatives.

The budget for the equipment and work is about £1,800. I am also having the garage door opener integrated into the system.

Will report the results nect week.

Fred doesn't post on here as far as i know. I found his site via his profile on M5board.com i think.
Worth posting over on Rennlist as there is a big 996tt modification crowd over there.

edit: here's a link to his profile: LINK

Dozer,

I had Prestige work on my car almost a year ago. I don't have any pictures at the moment. I'll try to attach some to my profile by the end of the weekend.

Anyway, getting back to the topic in discussion...

I've got...

Mcintosh MX406 Head Unit

Retro styling and in my opinion the best head unit out there. Only the Alpine F1 is comparable but I think that's a very ugly product and doesn't generate the type of sound I enjoy.

www.mcintoshlabs.com/default.aspx

Diamond Audio m6 speakers (Custom door builds)

I had Prestige custom build the doors on my car to fit these speakers. Actually, the doors were not really designed with audio perfection in mind so any speakers you fit to a car like mine will probably need door builds.

TDX10 Sub (In passenger foot well)

Wanted a 12" sub but had limited space to play with!

www.diamondaudio.com/MobileAudio/index.cfm?page=Subwoofers

Phoenix Gold 215 Graphic Equaliser

Makes all the difference! make sure you have some for of eq in the car.

Can't find a link anywhere as this product is fairly old. Still a good product nevertheless.

Also consider Alto Mobile UCS PRO (Digital Time alignment). I'll be upgrading to this soon.

Genesis 5ch amplifier (for speakers)

They produce the best sound I've ever heard.

(I have to admit though that I am considering changing my amps to 2 Diamond Audio Technology D7402's. I haven't heard the type of sound they produce but they are the only amps I would ever 'upgrade' to.)

www.genesis-ice.com/

DLS A6 Mono block (for the sub)

Didn't originally want this but I found I needed the extra power for the sub.

I Live in NW London so if you want to drop by, let me know.

Hope this was helpful...
