Hi Guys

im normally found on the grumpy side but have a few questions

1. if I was looking to spend 30-35k on a weekend car what will hopefully rise in value which car? 993-964-996
2. What are these cars like do they require lots of small maint done or is it the big stuff.
3 what to look out for in these models.

I've looked at BMW's Mercs but my heart says buy a Porsche but just not sure what model.

The older cars will require more maintenance and you will probably need a lot of patience to find a good one as plenty of cars come up for sale which look good on the surface to an untrained eye but will need £10k to put them right.

My money, with your budget would be a 996 turbo. Much more modern, better corrosion protection, lower maintenance costs and with an engine / drivetrain to leave the other options wondering where you went.

Prices are on the up but there is plenty more to go imho.

Others will no doubt be along to convince you that a 964 or 993 are better - just depends if you like sandals, folk music and warm beer which makes your beard sticky.

I think when it comes to performance, it depends where you came from. My 997.2 C4S feels really slow, but i have had considerably quicker turbocharged cars previously. However, if you're coming from a Lada Riva, you may find just about any 911 quick!

With this in mind, the sound forms a large part of the character with these cars. Character which is somewhat missing with the newer Turbo cars.

You could get a really nice 996 C4S and have money for a warranty to cover the potential IMS issues (or just get the car upgraded to eliminate the possible issue).

Hi

1 - Any good 964 or 993. Preferably manual coupe. Or maybe a 996T or higher mileage 996GT3.
2 - About 2k per annum as long as you get a sorted one in the first place. Be extra careful of rust.
3 - Check out Jackals Forge website for the ultimate 993 buyers guide, most of which translates to the 964.

I work for a OEM supplier so im aware of IMS issues ive also asked a few contacts in a few OPC's in England and Germany to keep an eye out for me.

Im just unsure what model. I love the look of the 964-993 but love the performance of the 996 turbo. Then I would also like to recover something when I come around to selling.

ive been lucky enough to be able to pay off a good chunk of my mortgage and schools fees for my daughter so just want to treat my self to something what I will enjoy but not left with something I will regret. So thanks for the input

Different engine block in them same as the GT2 and GT3.

when mentioned I was talking about the models which have the older gen1 dfi version engine what are prone to it

but thanks for your input or my 3 questions smile

DFI engines are fine too. Its the M96/M97 series engines that are affected. Thats all 996 and 997 Carrera models. thumbup

There is a few failures after the gen2 engine but mostly just poor workmanship on the engine . but like most cars there's always problems if you look hard enough.

Its never as simple as that. IMS issues are a small part of the whole. But if IMS, Bore Scoring and D chunking worry you then avoid the 996 Carreras and the gen 1 997 Carreras. Of course, you could get one with a properly rebuilt engine, a Porsche warranty or on a maintenece plan.

Firstly you need to decide what you want as the cars you have mentioned are all very different. Unless that doesnt matter?

You can catch a serious cold on ANY 911. Any 911 can hide £1000's of necessary work whether it be engine, rust, sispension, brakes, rads, turbos etc etc etc!

Buy with care!

Others will no doubt be along to convince you that a 964 or 993 is a car more engaging, tactile drive whilst the Turbo is a four wheel drive rocket sled that offers little or nothing in the driving engagement stakes- in short, you may as well take the train. It just depends what floats your boat.

Thanks

I would say im not bothered which model as for me Porsche is a dream car.

996 im not overly impressed with the lights many have likened them to fried eggs.
997 looks and sounds impressive but a premium for a good car
993-964 I love the shapes curves but put off slightly about the older engines what will need a bit more TLC.

as I type this the Porsche specialist across from my work has had a 997 dropped of on a flatbed with engine failure and has 2 more being worked on frown

It sounds like you just want something to enjoy that works. You only buy an air cooled car becuase you REALLY want one. They are marmite.

I would therefore say get a 997 Carrera Gen2 (DFI engine) either, coupe, targa or cab. PDK or manual is completely up to you.

You should just get one for 35k but if you want piece of mind with a warranty etc you may need to go nearer to £40k.

Good luck!

Only the early ones with orange indicators look like fried eggs if it really makes any difference to you. The facelift 996 lights look a lot better IMO.
997 Gen 2 would be your most user friendly and most expensive option, but you will lose money in depreciation. If you want something that will maintain or even increase in value then you will need to go considerably older - maybe 996 Turbo would fit that bill - just. A 993 would be your safest bet for a depreciation proof car.
