The 996 and 997 GT3's shared essentially the same engines as the 996 and 997 cups. This being the most successful racing engine that Porsche ( and probably any other manufacturer have ever produced).
The 991 has a completely different engine to the 991 cup which retains basically the same engine as earlier cup cars. Officially this is because the 991 GT3 Engine incorporates technology that the racing engine does not. Unofficially it's really because the engine is a lot cheaper to produce. Think of that what you will.

I know it's a discussion that's probably been done to death but is there a reason Porsche moved away from the Mezger engine in the GT3? Costs, emissions?
Seems strange to suddenly use different engines after using the Mezger on both cars for so long.
