Do you think a new 997.1 (2007) was worth the asking price?

OK. I paid £28,000 18 months ago for a 2007 C2S (40,000 miles).
Fabulous car and no issues to date but, do you think that if this car had been sold at £45k new that it would have been under sold?
I have the original invoice and it doesn't make happy reading if your pen is hovering over the cheque.
I think it would have been a good product at £45k, no more really.
Other makes are seriously over priced too but, do you think the Porsche marque is over valued?
I love the car and will be keeping it so have an interest in Porsche 'stock'.

It depends on your view of 'value'. I have no doubt that whilst it sold at maybe 70k, it probably cost under 30k to manufacture.

But its not that simple is it? What about the huge skill and experience in designing such a magnificent car?

If an operation on you costs £20k, is that crazy? Or do you need to account for over 100 years training and experience that maybe in the room?

Porsche will sell their cars for what the market will support. Some people are shouting that the 991 GT3 is massively underpriced when you look at its capabilty. Maybe its actual build cost is irrelavant?

Some valuers suggest that only when 'second hand' does price reflect true value, or worth.

Porsche could be seen to be 'expensive' when new and this in part is reflected in rampant depreciation, depending on models. A vanilla Carrera can lose up to £30k in its first year. 997 Turbo S even more. You may think a 'Datsun' GTR offers good value at £75k, offering comparable performance to a Porsche TTs at £150k, but the percentage depreciation is similar. Is a Ferrari Speciale worth twice the cost of a GT3? Some would say yes, but only if you can afford it.

I would suggest the £45k would be 'too cheap' for the new 997 Carrera....after all an M3 equivalent would have been c £50k. So maybe £70k would be about right.

Incidentally, the average profit Porsche make per car is €15k.......

When Lotus want £67k for a Evora then to me a 911 seems cheap.

what you could say is a 911 worth 20k over a Cayman and then you have to think, mmm nope not one bit.
makes Boxsters look great value.

This is a new twist on the much more common "what will my X be worth in X years" threads.

I would argue that it was very well priced - it sat in a market of 1 at the time - no true competitors in the UK market... Aston V8 was a fair more when it came out, as was the R8 and M6. M3 was a bit less but not as purpose made or desirable.

The M6 is probably the one that is 'not worth' it's list price - a huge premium over the M5 for a very similar set of mechanicals also based on a standard production car - as mentioned above, there was immediate market correction on the second hand value of those cars.

Whilst the volume of 911s produced has pushed prices down - the fact that the youngest 997s still hit high 50s and in the case of the GTS even more - this suggests that the market has corrected to demand and supply fairly reasonably.

So... Yes it was more than worth it at between 60 and 70k new, if it cost significantly less it would have been the price of a well specced 330d... And I hope we would all agree it is worth more than that!
