My 2005 987S has just passed 21k miles, and has started making a strange and intermittent noise.

At best, it just sounds like a gurgling noise barely audible above the engine note, at worst it sounds like somebody is standing behind me spraying an aerosol can and then frying some bacon!

There are no warning lights on the dash, the engine light is off and the oil reads full. I have turned the aircon completely off to check that is not the cause of the noise.

I have booked it in at the OPC to diagnose and fix, but my concern is whether I should drive it there or have it recovered. It is about 45 miles away. I have never heard a noise like it before, so probably should not take any risks.

Could be. Would there be any other signs, like temp garage increase or coolant under the car?

Get the car flat bedded in and the noise diagnosed.

The noise could be a number of things.

Doesn't sound, err read like a water pump but I could be wrong. Besides there are other critical components that if bad present risk if you continue to drive the car.

Why assume the risk if you don't have to?

Flat bed the car in and be safe.
