I'm thinking of selling my 996 and getting into something older.
I've been watching these threads for years but just registered as nows the time to pull the trigger.

Who's the best independents to speak to?

I'm thinking 993 or 964

Depends on your budget really and if you want to deal with an independent trader or the likes of JZM, Norhway, 911Virgin etc (All three have good reviews).

One of the very few I would talk too is Adrian Crawford. Knows more about Air cooled Porsche IMO than just about anyone else out there, and doesn't have the big overheads to deal with. He's also a very nice fella.
I've bought two Porsches from him unseen until I picked them up. Both were excellent and just as described.

I've met enough wheeler dealers selling under the Porsche Specialist banner, some of which are not much more than modern day horse traders. Some are just silly expensive and a rip off.

Best of luck with your search, they are great cars smile

Don't dismiss private sales (place some 'wanted' ads) but obviously do all the due diligence and PPI stuff.

964 has the traditional silhouette and front wings, but 993 is better under the skin.

Market seems to prefer Coupe and Manual, so Cabs, Targas and Tips are often better value. 964 preferred as C2, 993 C2 or C4 - both very good. Rust is the big concern - not fatal, but a nuisance, and mileage obviously has big influence on prices.

Older technology than a 996 - but many prefer that.
