folks,

how much more maintenance attention and cost does a 996 Turbo require over and above a 996 C4?

In the short term, no more other than more tyres, discs, pads etc if you drive it harder. I've listed my costs to date under the car in my profile.

I've been told that changing a clutch is a lot more expensive on the turbo (about £2k every 22 to 36k miles depending on your driving).

DarrenR - Thanks for keeping a list of your expences on your 996tt.

Its cost a lot ! Insurance wow! sounds like you eat tyres strange about the drivers foot mat - perhaps its that ghost with heavy feet.

my 996 is nowhere near that amount of maintence. but then perhaps I drive like a pussycat.

Pleased you are enjoying the car. I am tempted by changing mine for a 996 tt not the x pack though in the summer. It would be a 1 year old I would be able to afford wife permitting.

James

A lot of the maintainance cost is due to brake discs and pads plus tyres. In the first few years I have gone through a lot due mainly to VMAX days where I have previously cracked up a set of front discs every two visits. Anyone who uses their Turbo for road work would not have this level of costs. Perhaps other "road only" turbo owners can comment on how long their discs and pads last?

The insurance issue was painful in the first two years, but once the car got down to <£75k in value one or two of the direct insurance companies started to give sensible quotes, with L&V saving me more money in the third year of ownership than it cost to extend the vehicle warranty for years 3 & 4.

I'd throughly recommend you switching over to a turbo.

I had my first turbo from new on a 02 plate for 12 months and covered 10k miles and the only costs were insurance and fuel.(sold it when the first service was due)I only used it on the road so when i sold it everything was fine and nothing short of rear tyres needed replacing.

However my second turbo with the x50 pack is 13 months
old and covered only 6k miles yet due to harder road driving and a couple of track days has chewed through a set of tyres, required a brake fluid change due to over cooking the fluid (not a nice experience)has had new front discs and pads and had to have new engine and gearbox mounts!Luckily the latter was covered under warrenty.
Insurance was a lot more expensive over a std tt also.
Is it worth it?
Oh yes

no dont tell me how much nicer a x pack is over the tt - no dont you dare!

I really cant afford an x pack one. (translate - the wife will really hit the roof, go bannanas and will never give me any money ever again to spend - actually it wont even get that far it will be just a no to changing my current 911 period- so if I tread carefully and go with the flow might just get a tt in the summer if im very very good)

thanks everyone,

one humble question, is the x50 noticeably different than the turbo for a point 2 point driver like me?

Cheers.
