I've got chance of a 1979 928.

Manual gearbox, genuine 70k miles, owned since 1982 by the same chap, good condition, all history known.

What's it's value and are they worth having ?

I've always liked them but haven't been in one yet alone driven one.

Value: priceless.
If you're of a certain age like me and quite liked Risky Business, then there's nothing cooler.

Hi,
I owned a much newer example, an S4 manual, but the driving experience is quite raw for a GT, and the gearbox has a dog-leg first gear that takes a bit of getting used to, a few got crashed by driver's doing the traffic light drag race and sticking it in reverse.... Ouch. If the seller is agreeable then take it for a spin and enjoy. Bear in mind this is now a 35 year old car, but if the dampers, springs and bushes are in good order, and the tracking and alignment is true then they handle remarkably well for such a big car. You have double wishbone suspension at the front, and a passive rear steer axle at the back, the so-called Weissach suspension.

Good quality tyres are a must on these as well.

these cars are very rare and will at the very least retain it's value, and with it being a 2 owner example, showing 70K miles, and a manual it is quite rare.
Don't leave it languishing under a dust sheet, as these need to be driven and enjoyed and do not respond well to long periods of inactivity, they need exercise!
You want to check when the cam-belt was last done, and ensure that it is the newer updated style of tooth on the belt, if it is the older type then the belt is very old. I think they went from a round tooth on the belt to a square type, and the pulleys were upgraded to suit, the belt is amazingly long, a 6ft loop!
Don't expect the air-con to work that well, as these systems were designed for R12, which has a larger molecular size than the R134a, unless the seller has gone to the expense of upgrading the system for the R134a. Contrary to popular belief you can get hold of R12, but it is hellishly expensive, something like £900 for the fill alone.

Just don't bump the front wings, you can't get them any more, and to think some where cut to make them into S4 replicas. Shudder! Along with the doors they are made from aluminium and are relatively soft.

Do some research, get it inspected and if it is good buy, cherish and enjoy!

HTH

Above is a shrewd assessment - especially comment on value/rarity.

But I'm puzzled by comments on aircon. The old R12 refrigerant in 928 actually ran colder than the more eco-friendly R134a, but whatever refrigerant used 928 aircon excellent when the a/c system itself and the HVAC temp control loop operating ok.

If it has not been converted then would expect poor aircon, insofar as the gas would not have been topped up for years (maybe this was what was meant?) since R12 was banned back in 1990s

They are utterly superb. I have one, also a 79 manual (well 2 actually but one is a non-sunroof track car) and you can't beat them for fun for the pound. Should expect to pay £5-8k I reckon if it's as good as you say.

It's like a Porsche muscle car, plenty of grunt and power, a fabulous noise but great chassis balance and handling and far, far more comfortable, practical and civilised than a contemporaneous 911.

Is the gearbox input shaft/bearing still an issue on these?

A friend ran one of these years ago and replaced the shaft twice at £1K+ each time.

If you haven't driven one I would keep an open mind about the manual or auto gearbox in these. A friend got a GT recently, it was one of the few Porsches on my bucket list but TBH I found the setup with the manual box leaves a lot to be desired. The clutch operation is really heavy, I mean really old fashioned heavy and sluggish feeling. They also put a shelf in there which gets in the way of your left foot big time, its like the car was really not designed to be a manual. For sure it makes the car faster but in bang for buck terms the money being asked now for manual 928s just doesn't make sense if speed is a priority, in other words if outright speed and handling sporting performance is really that important then the 928 has always looked like the wrong answer to me.

Went to have a good look at the car on Tuesday.

The owner pulled it out of storage, cleaned it up and fired up the engine. Sounded magnificent.

He hasn't used the car regularly for more than five years but has kept it in good order and regularly warmed up and driven.

Unfortunately due to my interest he's now got some motivation and has decided to keep it and start using it again !

I do like them and have now started trawling the ads. Found a really nice GTS

I'm fairly sure this will be well out of my price range so thought I'd ask on here first. What should it be worth ?

The clutch should not repeat not be heavy and is indicative of an incorrectly adjusted helper spring.

The shelf above your feet can easily be removed, many owners do this.

The gearbox itself is a delight but it's not an MX-5 and needs to be treated with some respect and not hurried, like many old Porsche boxes.

tsk-tsk-tsk

you of all people should keep up with the market trends readit

If Tom/Henry can sell a low mileage 928GTS Auto for the thick end of £35k recently, and several similar low mileage GTs have gone for £33-35k, with super rare 928 Club Sports changing hands in Germany for EUR80k, the trend for good cars is only one way.

There were only 42 928GTS Manuals ever registered in the UK between 1992 and 1995. A magnificent example like the Avantgarde car - correct colour, sports seats, extremely low miles and nice history is worth a lot more than £25k. I would say £40k is where it is being shown and it would sell.

I am pretty certain they wanted 33,000 before they changed it to POA.
