Tyre age and warranty?

Hi does anyone know if tyres over 6 years old prevent the official warranty from being put in place? I bought the car 15 months ago from an OPC and 2 new front tyres had been fitted prior to sale. Just had the car checked at another OPC today and I am told that because the tyres are week 37, year 2008 they should be replaced and that I won't be able to renew my warranty when it is due in May next year. There is 6.6mm of tread left on them so don't want to replace them unnecessarily. Any one had a similar situation?

Anything not covered by the Warranty can be discounted to a point - the 111pt check also doubles as the Approved Used Car Check - certain criteria have to be adhered to prior to sale (min 4mm pad life and 3mm tread on tyres for example) having a tyre less than 3mm is not a fail on a Warranty application. I suspect they are confusing the two. The age of tyres is a recommendation made by the manufacturer not law.

I would consider approaching the OPC that sold you the car and get them to replace the tyres for ones that have a normal 6 year lifespan and not one of barely more than 18 months.

Interesting point on approaching the original OPC. They never even had the courtesy to respond to my email informing them of the fact that one of the radiators they had also replaced prior to me buying the car had not had a hose connected correctly which resulted in a major coolant loss. The error was corrected by another OPC. That said, I will take this tyre issue up with them.

No chance I'm afraid, the tyres met standards at point if sale and are a consumable.

Pop new ones on and sell the part worns on eBay?

Must admit I will probably go for option to replace and sell the part worn tyres. It won't stop me sending another email to the OPC though if only to make me feel better. I certainly won't be travelling to Leicestershire for my next car when the current one gets replaced next year.
