My 911 is my first RWD car. Up to now they've all been either fwd or 4wd.

Yesterday driving around the north circular I had a moment when I accelerated away from the roundabout and the rear drifted out just before the stability management kicked in and put the car straight again.

A lot of fun, but slightly unexpected...

So it got me thinking that a bit of skid pan training may be useful.

Has anyone here done it, and did you use your own car?

Does the fact that a 997 is rear engined make a big difference, and do I need to practice in a rear engined car, or is it pretty similar to a mid or front engined RWD car's handling?

It's a lot harder to unstick than a front or mid engined car! Try an Andy Walsh day, you'll learn a huge amount.

Ive done it my old car at PEC, they teach you at a very basic level but in a safe and controlled environment.

No point on a skip pan imo,

You need to do it on a walshey day like has been said.

You can do an "introduction to drifting" day at Oulton Park, where they wet the smooth tarmac rally stages for you to drive around - very good practice and kind to your car.

I would recommend the skid pan at silverstone and the ice hill. Both very good for learning what you can and cant get away with.

does not really teach you anything about driving bar on ICE, low speed tail out fun it about as good as a computer game.

when you have grip in the dry it's a whole new world of hardness.

Agreed - great way to learn and a lot of fun too...did this in the C4S which was scary as it just held on and on and on until it didn't big time and in the GT3 which was such a joy to control properly.

Do it.
