Is the 996 destined to become a chav-chariot?
Discussion
It's my dream to own a Porker. I'm 29 now, so I've set myself the (hopefully) realistic target of owning one before I'm 40. But as a dreamer, I frequently find myself browsing Autotrader, 911virgin.com and others at lunchtimes.
One thing has really stood out during this time. Early 996es are going for as little as 25K, even in RHD guise, yet it's difficult to get any sort of 993 for under 30K.
Is the 996 going to continue to descend in value, particularly with the advent of the 997? And if/when it starts hitting 20K, will it be within the reach of the kind of people who really have no business owning such a car? Comments and insults recieved with equal interest.

I guess it depends on whether the image appeals to them or not. Older 911s and the 924/944/968 are available for reasonable money, but haven't become so-called 'chav chariots'... in fact most 944 drivers I see tend to be enthusiasts.
If you equate the kids who hang around McDonalds carparks and buy loads of bolt-ons for their Novas 'chavs', then I doubt they'd bother with the 996 since cosmetic accessories and bodykits are damned expensive for it!!!!!

'Old model' prices always take a dive when a new model is announced. Having been told by my dealer that there is a 12 month wait for a 997 C2 , and 14 months for a C2S, I think you'll find that prices will stabilize a bit when people realize that they have to wait. 996 prices also remain fairly strong at main dealers. I for one will not be 'panic selling' my 996.

Maybe, but not for long as they'll not be able to afford to insure / service it.
Like the 928, you mean?
I they hit £20k can you think of a better everyday car? I can't...y'see at that price point they are unlikely to drop further and rather than being (for the majority) an object of desire, they become a very real proposition.
Incidentally, I didn't notice many people of an Eastern European appearance clutching bunches of heather driving Guards Red SC targas around in the mid '90s and I doubt I'll see many of them now in Polar Silver 996s (even if most of them seem to have been GT3d up).
Please do all you can to continue to talk the price of 996s down, I'll buy a couple and flog them to disillusioned Evo 8 owners

"Chav"?
Defination of a Chav to me, is a way of life, someone who will definately buy a Corsa or Saxo and even if they won the lottery would rather spend 20 K on modifying this car. It fits in with the bitter "working class hero"-against-all-you-snooty-stuck up Porsches image. If they did move up the ladder, I could see them moving to a Rover 75 and chaving it up. It's a state of mind and a statement I reckon.
I wouldn't say that 20 grand will put a 996 into the hands of people who have "no business owning one"!
My previous 928 S4 was considerably less the 20K and yet I maintained it well and got it serviced at either main dealers or an official Bosch main agent.
I don't think it was much cheaper to run then my 993TT, mainly because being water cooled and so old- things inevitably went wrong with the cooling system, such as water pumps and radiators etc etc.

I think you misunderstood me. I'm not someone who looks down on poor people; after all, I am one myself, coming from a deprived northern town terraced house background.
However, I stand by my statement: I'd hate to see Porsches in the hands of numpties who can't handle them, afford to look after them, or who would othwerwise maltreat the car. I want to own a Porsche, but I see it as something I have to work hard to earn, not something that I'll just buy on impulse when it becomes cheap enough.
People who can't afford to look after or run them are unlikely to buy them in the first place! Just because the purchase price has reduced it doesn't mean it's any cheaper to maintain. A £5k 928 will still have much the same running costs as the £70k Porsche it once was (except it will probably be pretty knackered so will cost more to keep going
).

I don't see why i'm a bad driver and a moron just because i can't spend more than 20k on a car?
witchfinder...
I have seen many a Porsche in the hands of people who cant handle them... but it doesnt mean they dont appreciate the ownership of such a fine vehicle.
I agree with others in the post, if your definition of a Chav car is simply one that is affordable then the 944 would be the Chav weapon of choice for tearing up fast food takeaway car parks.
As long as the french keep pumping out little cars with VTS and VTR badges on them I think we're safe!
Besides the 911 boot isnt big enough for a quad set of 20" woofers and 5 10billion watt amps!!!

Re-read my post. I didn't say A implied B, but it's true that B frequently implies A.
My question would perhaps be better rephrased. When chavs can afford 996es, what do you think the implications will be?
porsches are odd cars - they engender envy and admiration in equal parts in those who dont own one, and the assumption is often that the driver is a bit of a flash harry. those who drive them however, do so (for the most part) because they genuinely love them. They arent easy cars to keep, they do need looking after, and hence you have to really want one to put up with the inevitable flow of bills and maintenence projects. (I'm talking about the older porsches of course) This I think will keep them safe from the "chav" epithet.
