Replace faulty tappet and improved engine performance

Took my car in due to an annoying ticking noise and it transpires that one of my tappets was knackered.
Had the whole lot replaced whilst the engine was out and now the car seems to be putting down considerably more power, in fact it feels like it used to when we first bought it - I had just considered the power drop over the years to be a combination of getting used to the car and also its age ('98 996)
The car usually does drive a bit better following a service and oil change etc but the improvement this has caused is very noticeable, anybody else encountered this?
