PCM 3 sat nav upgrade warning

Now, some of you will mock me for this, probably rightly so, but I'm still going to post up just in case anyone else falls foul.

If you have the PCM3 sat nav update done, the £150 one with 7-digit postcode, do not ever reset the system back to factory settings (like if you were selling it to someone). What happens is that, without any warning, you will lose the entire update and have to pay for it again

Granted, factory reset means as it left the factory. I just didn't think for one moment that it would erase the update and I'd have to pay again to get it back. Given that you don't even get the update disc any more, it's very frustrating that these are one-time only use that the OPCs get, so they cannot even help you out. If I'd remotely know that there was a risk of this, I'd never have done it, but there's nothing in any of the literature or a warning on the PCM of this.


So anyway, don't be a prat and make the same mistake as me!

Why would you have to pay to get it back again? Surely OPC would have a record of you having paid for it. If PCM ended up being faulty would you have to buy it again then too? It is, after all, just a software upgrade.

Nope, apparently not. Because it's a one-time use software upgrade, you have to pay all over again. At least, that's what I was told by Colchester yesterday.

I will be querying it though, because as you say it seems utterly outrageous to me.

Unless the OPC called out the terms when you did the upgrade then I'd be insisting on a free re-upgrade.

I've had the upgrade and was given no warning around the use if any resets.

Although the term "factory reset" suggests as it left the factory, you wouldn't expect that meaning when applied to an ECU reset, security fixes etc so I don't see why the PCM would be different.

Have to agree that Porsche should have informed you not to do a reset as part of the upgrade. If they did not the surely the liability falls to the OPC if not Porsche.

As has been said above, if you factory reset an iPhone - for example - you'd still have the latest firmware on it. I've "factory reset" my TV on more than one occasion after firmware upgrades and it's never gone back to its original firmware. If you asked most people I'd wager they would take "factory reset" to colloquially mean "return all settings to their defaults".

I'd raise hell with my OPC if they ever suggested I'd have to pay for something like that twice. The "one time use" stuff is crap too.

I think its shameful and embarrassing but when a main dealer is involved you know a headache isnt far away.
