Importing from USA

(Price of car + price of shipping) + 10% duty + 20% VAT
So for example a £10,000 car with £2,000 shipping:
10,000+2,000+1,200+2,640=15,840
For a car under 3 years old the 10% duty might be waived as Returned Goods Relief (EU manufactured goods returning to EU).
For cars over 10yrs old it'll just need an MOT, then pay £55 to register it (needs road-taxing at the same time).
Youngers cars will need an SVA test (Single Vehicle Approval) which is more involved & stringent.
For either the main items you're likely to need are:
A rear foglight on the offside (right side)
Headlights that dip to the left (might be possible to switch the current ones across depending on the model)
Indicator repeaters on the sides somewhere.

Cost me $2250 to ship two Porsches in a 40' countainer plus insurance .....

There are cheaper ways to ship ie not in a countainer but I have read many horror stories regarding this.
We had no import duties due to us as we had been resident in the US.
Had to have the cars VOSA checked but that was it. (We did the prep before the cars left USA as the parts are cheaper)
btw we took the 2.5% option on the insurance

Gents thank you very much for all that information. I think the shipping costs and insurance will pale into insignificance when the Vat and Duty are applied. I was thinking about a GT3 RS (4) but i think it would be safer and cheaper looking in UK - if you can find one that is!!! Thanks for the feedback - very much appreciated.

Sorry, I wrote this reply this morning, only just seen that it didn't post for some reason:It might be on the high side but it can also vary a lot - the USA's a very big place. I plucked a figure out of the air to use for a demonstration of the maths really.
Insurance is part of the shipping cost and that will vary a lot between a $10,000 car and $200,000 one - I've no idea what the OP's after importing.
