Can the VIN tell a 944 TurboS from a Turbo?
Discussion
To be honest I dont think there is a car called the 944 Turbo S.
What specifically are you trying to find out?
I could write a very long response, but I think it would be easier if you tell me exactly what you want to know?
M030, 220bhp or 250bhp, bridge spoiler, Silver Rose etc

The 944 Turbo of 1988/1989 had a number of model descriptions given to it[by the public, not Porsche] namely:-
Turbo "S"
Turbo "SE"
or sometimes
Silver Rose
A genuine 1988 built for 1989 model year 944 Turbo SE can usually be identified by the equipment levels:
Air Con
Limited Slip Diff code 220
Sports Seats
Sports Suspension code 030
Adjustable Suspension on front
Bigger brake calipers
Drop Forged Alloy Rims 16" with 9j on rear
Rubber rear spoiler---NEVER BRIDGE SPOILER
Your car had 996 wheels on from memory but other than that it was a full blown Turbo SE.
I saw a link somewhere, if I can find it I'll post it here
Cheers

Thanks Allan,
Unfortunately my car took a leap into the scenery last week after running over a greasy patch and the assessors were not aware of the S/ SE![]()
Kristin
Does that mean that they're trying to back out of the claim, or are quibbling over the value? Sorry to hear your bad news - best of luck getting it sorted.

A quick Google brings up this link:

Apparently the fact it's an S can be verified from the engine number, but not the VIN.
(S/SE are the same - S in USA, SE in UK)

Cars here were as follows. In 88 S was an option. 89, 90 were all S but not called S. these most all came with Mo30 adjustable suspension, K27/8 turbo, LSD, Hardened 1st 2nd gears, S4 brakes and all colors.
Excellent more misinformation, this is getting good.
All s but not called S means that there were not S..!!!!!!!
The 88-91 cars had a 26/8 KKK turbo
M030 was still an option on the suspention
Everything else above was standard.
Sunroof delete is the best option to have.

yes there is - you have seen one!
Lots of info here - www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Pit/4786/
Although Porsche UK did not call it the Turbo S, they were apparently going to originally (according to an ex-Porsche mechanic I have spoken to). My car was supplied by Porsche UK and has a Turbo S (not SE) supplement to the handbook to cover the differences. It also has a Turbo S badge - could have been added later obviously, but I think not. Somewhere I have a copy of an early roadtest of then soon-to-be-released 944 Turbo S, badged as my car is. I have not found it since a house move, but am moving again in the new year so it should turn up.
However, as mentioned above, the Turbo S is nothing special - same spec as '89 Turbos but with the huge advantage of not having a sunroof
