What Boxster model/price & Warranty
Discussion
Hey Guys,
I'm looking at buying a 986.
What's your thoughts on price for one in good condition and what sort of mileage should I be aiming for.
I can't afford to replace the engine this year if it decides to go bang so what is my best choice of Warranty?
Anything else to look out for?
Thanks chaps.

You won't be able to get the Porsche warranty on such an old car and I'm afraid the third-party warranties don't have a particularly good reputation. The last, and probably your best, option is to buy from a dealer who offer their own warranty (eg: RPM Cheddington) or service contract.

2001 seems a bit arbitrary
You need to drive a few, then decide. £7k should get you a nice Boxster S, or an average one and a small'ish budget to make it "nice"
Try a 2.7 and a 2.5 to see if you want the extra performance of a 3.2S
I'd look for the extended leather - dash, door cards etc.. as it makes the car a nicer place to be

I looked at the Hartech plan, not quite clear on what happens if the Engine goes pop (under Gold).
I do not want the 3.2 (extra insurance cost isn't worth it imo)
I want to get it checked and any niggles fixed off the bat with Hartech and would take it straight in.
I've seen some on paper that look good at ~£5k, I'd rather buy a well maintained Boxster than go to £7k for the S.
Reason for 01 onwards was a friends Boxster (2000) has had lots of problems and I know that doesn't mean anything but seemed as good a reason as any to discriminate.
Just trying to get a sense from here on what's sensible to expect.

From what you say I would be looking at a 2002 2.7 facelift car (glass rear screen/glovebox/bumper restyle etc). For around £7k you should be able to find something fairly sorted with good rubber and the IMS/clutch done. Other things to look for as having been replaced (bargaining tools) are Coil Packs, Starter Motor, Air con Condensors, Radiator, Water Pump, Suspension Arms, Drive belt
There was a very good low mileage pre facelift 2.7 advertised recently at a renowned Surrey specialist within your budget. There are plenty of cars out here, lots have been fastidiously maintained, a similar amount haven't! Above all take your time and drive as many as possible!
Regards the spec and leather etc, within reason I would go for mechanical condition above all else. Aside from the marmite colours and poverty spec. My first Boxster didn't have full leather, but was still a nice place to be, my current one has leather and it is obviously nicer, but it was just the icing on the cake of a good car

Thanks for the advice, all Leather does make a big difference.
Thoughts on; http://www.cridfords.co.uk/inventory/used_cars/200...
It's a bit pricey for me but the very low mileage is attractive!
Other than here & Autotrader, are there any other specific dealers worth keeping an eye on?

Are there any well thought of dealers, pickings are pretty slim on here & boxa. Autotrader the pricing is all over the place and doesn't appear a lot of quality.
Compare the three below as an example;

Any comments on the two below, I hope I'm not taking the piss

Is it worth getting a (local to seller) indy to check one out post viewing before buying, what sort of cost would I be looking at?
Help/advice greatly appreciated.
