When is the best time to top the oil up ?
When the car is stone cold (ie first thing before starting in the morning) or when the car is completely warmed up, after a long run ?

Cheers.

Generally speaking:

On flat surface, when car has not been moved recently and engine is cold... oil has fully settled then.

Come on Melv, Dom would need to be marvo the magic memory man to think as far back as when he last drove the Baron

Anyway..

If aircooled 911 need engine warm & engine running & on flat ground to check.

924/944/968/928 check warm or cold, but if warm give oil few mins to drain down before checking.

Box/996- no idea- sorry

The Service Manager at Lovett's in Bristol advised me to check and top up the oil level when the car is on flat ground (obviosu I know) and when the temperature guage is showing 80 degrees.

That is on a Boxster 2.7

On the boxster and 996 C2/C4/C4S it is engine off, flat surface, engine cold - then take the reading from the dash gauge.

On the 996 GT engined cars (GT2/GT3/TT) it is engine running, warm flat surface - gauge will show automatically.

I wouldn't trust the dashboard read out though. Mine said the level was at 'max' but since I am a pedantic bugger I also checked the dipstick and that showed just under half full.
