Well, I have sold the Boxster S and bought a new car. A slightly less comfy car at that….

It is a 993 RS, one of my all time favourite cars at any price. Here are some pics:

I am picking up the car from its enthusiast owner in Surrey on 30 December. He is selling it for a genuine reason. He is sad to see it go.

The car was built as a comfort model. I have been told that it was converted to Clubsport spec when still new by a Porsche main dealer. Why? Apparently because the owner wanted to have a Clubsport car with electric windows and aircon! The car has the Clubsport welded in cage, engine cut out switch, single mass flywheel, steel syncro rings in the gearbox, the big wings and an alloy strut brace. It has the correct fire-proof Nomex Recaros. I am told that this little conversion cost the original owner DM30,000.

The car came to the UK in March 2002, brought in by a chap called Man Lau. I think it was he who did the following:

1. May 2002: MPH speedo fitted.
2. June 2002: Cargraphic exhaust fitted (with the 100 cell cats, 42 mm sports manifolds with heat exchangers).
3. August 2002: Custom front brake cooling ducts installed (it was designed by Barwell Motorsport, they take air from under the car, not via the fog light area as in some conversions),
4. August 2002: Custom aluminium floor trays installed (they go beneath the feet of the driver and passenger),
5. August 2002: Front wheel arches rolled back (Done by Birds of Hartge fame).
6. A rather tasty engine conversion was done next. It uses “RS Tuning” parts with sports camshafts, mechanical rocker arms and uprated valve springs (so higher revs can be sustained). Then an individual throttle body conversion was undertaken with “magnesium race inlets” and a BMC cone air filter. The original Varioram system comes with the car as well. The car was re-mapped by Olaf Manthey. There are various maps supplied with the paperwork, the last one claimed 340 BHP………
7. The car has Cup rigid shims and uniball anti roll bar mounts. It was fitted with Manthey Racing’s suspension which was optimised for the ‘Ring.
8. It has a carbon rear wing, the top part is left unpainted.
9. Cargraphic aluminium pedals were fitted.
10. It has a motorsport differential, installed July 2003. As some of you will know, diffs are often knackered on 993 RSs.
11. And how about this??……..the car has air jacks!! Surely the ultimate in pit lane one-upmanship?

The car comes with a spare set of Speedlines (originals) which I may refurb, although this will be expensive. It has Schroth harnesses. However, these aren’t the same both sides, so I may change them for new ones, but still red Schroth items. It needs a new steering wheel and door pulls (which are mucky). I might re-spray the nose and put on new Armourfend.

Tognola engineering inspected the car. Their service was exceptional. They said it needs new front discs and pads plus a few other minor things. They said that it hadn’t been in any major bangs.

There is one fly in the ointment though. I think the car needs a re-map. It has a big flat spot in the delivery at about 3000 RPM and this is evident on the maps that are supplied with the car’s paperwork. I am hoping that this can be sorted with a rolling road re-map. I will be approaching 9M about this. My worry is that the delivery might be somewhat non-linear whilst ever it has the hardware installed in the engine……specifically the cams and throttle bodies. It might be that Motec is the only answer! And I don’t have the necessary folded for that right now.

I would be very surprised if the engine does actually produce 340 BHP. I know that most of the similar conversions that people do to their 993 RSs don’t actually show this sort of power on 9M’s rollers. I would think that at some point I would need to get the cam timing done (as per 9M thinking) if I am to get anywhere near optimising the engine’s output.

I don’t really want to broadcast what I paid for it (I might tell you if you e-mail me!), but it was probably average for a “Comfort spec” with 35,000 miles. This means that essentially, I have bought a cut-price Clubsport with the benefit of aircon and electric windows! In my view it has the perfect spec for a 993 RS. I should also thank Clubsport (Paul) for putting me in touch with the owner.

I had a long think about getting a 996 Turbo or 997S. However, I decided that I wanted the purity of the 993 RS and its depreciation-free nature. I knew that I would never have the fastest car at Vmax!! Better for me to own a truly unique car I thought. It will be perfect for trips to Spa or the Le Mans Classic.

It has been insured (including for track days) via Bickley Insurance who were fantastic. Welded cage?…..No problem! Telephone Chris Wilkins, 020 8773 8123, and tell him John sent you. I paid £1300, but that included the engine mods and protection of NCB, otherwise it would have been £1100. Track days will cost me an extra £79 each, which seems reasonable.

I am very happy indeed. I know the car will be too loud for some track days. However I am looking forward to getting the car exactly how I want it….making it “mine”.

tony, pesty, rico....thanks lads.

ronnie, the car will be on track very soon.

iguana, I have given a lot of thought to my mild-mannered GP image. So the 993 RS stays at home on week days. Home visits will be tackled in a.....wait for it.....a Mondeo. All £1000-worth. I'll try to put a picture of it on my profile at some point. At least I won't have to worry where I park the thing. However, I don't want anyone thinking you tax payers are over-paying us GPs. I have been working extra shifts at weekends to make the RS purchase possible and I will have to continue to do so for a long time! No old grannies were knocked off during the purchase of this fine motor.....honest.....

PS....I still love the Boxster S!

Brilliant cars! Please tell me you haven't bought this from 'clubsport' as I see him as an eternal RS owner.!!

Rico - D&P now, I'm headed there now, as are some of the usual boys

You have got a very good car, lots of the right bits on it.
A couple of guys have spoke to me about the car, and enquiring about the chassis numbers etc, so sounds like they have missed the boat.
I believe it has separate throttle bodies on it, if so get Colin to either motec it, or for Wayne to wave his magic mapping wand over it. He is very good, and will soon sort out the bhp.
Enjoy it.

Having just walked in from my brother's birthday pub crawl, what can I say other then way to fecking go. Su-bleedinig-perb. Words can't explain how happy I am for you to move on to a serious piece of kit such as this.

Way to go. Bloody marvellous....

DAZ

I notice a little sticker on the rear spoiler, don't suppose this car used to have a TOY-like numberplate?

Hi Paul,

One of those guys you spoke to on the phone was me! I'm John from Newcastle, I talked with you about having seen you race at Croft when I was the doctor there. Thanks for the advice and the chat. I spoke to Colin (9M) about the car as well and it was he who recommended Peter Tognola to do the inspection.

As you say, the car certainly does have individual throttle bodies. It was the vast amount of track orientated modifications that made me go for this car. I would say that the only way it could be improved on would be for Motec to be fitted. Unless Colin Belton talks me into fitting his new head...only kidding, I am after all skint for a bit.

I will have to have a natter with Colin about a "straight forward" re-map in the first instance as I understand this costs 500 quid. Motec on the other hand is £3,500 isn't it!?!

WRITTEN BY JOHNNY SENNA:

Thanks Daz, very kind words and much appreciated.

You are 100% right about the "TOY" reg. It had that plate on when it first hit UK shores. And for anyone wondering, the sticker on the rear spoiler that Daz refers to says....

"MANTHEY RACING"

I can't work that out and I'm supposed to be a moderator.

John, I took a photo of that car in the car park of a scenic toll road in the german countryside. After the sticker I noticed the exhaust pipes, hence the comment. I've seen pictures of the TOY-like plate on a red one after I took my photos. A number of PHers have visited Manthey Racing's facilitites and can confirm that Olaf M..... and his team run a first class outfit.

PS - If your yahoo address doesn't still work, then email me. I'll try and find the photo on my laptop and send it off to you.

The post with no name!! It was me lads.

Regarding spotting my new car in Germany 2 years back, Daz must win a prize for his observation and memory powers! The chap with the "TOY" number plate moved on to other more expensive cars. I understand he bought a 996 Turbo and I think he now has a GT3 RS, but don't quote me.

As you say Daz, you only ever hear good things about Olaf Manthey. There was an artcle about him in the Porsche Club mag not long ago. They say he has all cars thoroughly washed before they are allowed to enter his workshops.

I'm just glad a previous owner paid for Olaf's work on the engine and suspension of my new car.....

Oh Daz...my yahoo e-mail is the same as it was, or maybe just e-mail through my profile because that uses the same address. Any photos of the car would be appreciated big time.
