now I realise there is about a 5-8k price difference between the 2, but what would you have?

I like the idea of the alcantara and the fact that the s sport is holding its value v well, but obviously it would be nice to have to newer car with better tech.

is the better car worth the higher depreciation and the higher price? or would you go for the s sport knowing you're not going to lose much if any?

cheers

Get the gen 2 - DFI engine is noticeably better than the gen 1's lump (and more reliable, supposedly).

Are you not worried about the gen 1 car lunching its engine though?

Swings and roundabouts - the Sport may be a better investment, but the Gen.2 is the better car. The sort of decision only you can make really given that only you know how much of a hit you can afford to take. I lost my shirt on my Gen 1, but I knew that was gonna happen - I just had to have the car as I knew kids wouldn't be far off.

realistically what do people expect the gen2 to be worth in 1-2 yrs time? if taking 30k as a base now

Why do people have to do this, it seems there is a trend of just repeating and recycling this whole notion of 'gen 1 cars are bound to explode at any second' stuff until it somehow just becomes a given? No one would deny these cars have issues but there is never any perspective, for e.g. there are owners on planet 9 on the original engine who have got over 130k miles on there gen 1's, one guy has over 170k and there still going strong!

If they were "fundamentally flawed" then surely every single 3.4 would explode?
And so would the dealer rebuilds.

And herein lies the problem for those owning these cars or for those thinking about buying one who use the internet, that there are so many people like yourself who like to adopt an authoritive tone who then constantly recycle this scaremongering without any real objective data. I dont deny the engine design has issues etc etc but i wouldnt dream of trying to put a figure on it and using a description like the failure rate is 'well beyond' what you would expect (and what exactly does that mean...). The problem with this kind of constant repetition is that it just gets accepted as fact and then others just blindly repeat it and so on, to the point that no one can make an informed decision of whats what.

Did you ask me why I hold my view ?

Why do you think so many specialist repairers offer to "correct" the original design issues ?

Everybody is free to please themselves whether or not they pay any attention whatsoever to my opinion which simply answers the OP's question.

So here's a leading question for clarification. Anybody know what the ratio is of Gen1 engine failures compared to Gen2, as proportion of the number of Gen1 and Gen2 cars in circulation and adjusted for their comparative age ?

Fair enough ?
