Considering a Porsche.. but I think I need to learn....
Discussion
So being a stout BMW Z4 man for the last 7/8 years I'm considering a Porsche 911. I've little knowledge of them so I hope you can help me out on that front. I'm looking at the £25K mark and this seems to throw in the 3.6 and 3.8 around 2004-2006.
I've seen this one on auto trader, right spec, price etc but I wanted to ask if I were looking at this sort of year/spec whether there are any big things to look out for like dodgy engines/gearboxes and so on.

A search on here will provide plenty of tips to look out for when buying used, the main concern, however, with models of this age is bore scoring. A boroscope inspection is highly recommended prior to purchase and this could be part of a pre purchase inspection by a Porsche specialist.
The car looks to be a nice example and is well specced.

I'd have said bore scoring far less likely on any 911 that might cost that sort of money - which would be a 996. Worry about IMS bearing failure instead!spyderman8 said:

Worry about IMS bearing failure instead!If we take on board the advice given by Hartech, which I do, then the larger engines are the ones most prone to bore scoring and tiptronics compound the problem even further.
What you're going to hear on here is that 'most' 996/997's will suffer from bore scoring, IMS, RMS, D Chunking & a multitude of other ailments.
The reality is that nobody knows what percentage, many have quoted around 5%, you need to decide if that's a risk you are prepared to take.
I did & purchased my 996 3.4 over 5yrs ago, no massive issues yet but I'm aware that there may be at some point in the future, still enjoy owning & driving it

25k = 996 Turbo.
Or go vintage.
I'm not a gambling man, so no other 996 or 997.1s for me. Except the GTs of course, but 25k won't get you one of them in any flavour.
Not averse to the 996 turbo apart from the 'egglamps' and melted interior. At least the engine has a bullet proof rep from what I've read. Vintage what tho?Or go vintage.
