Early Cayman Customising Questions

Morning all,

My thought: buy an Early Cayman and have fun with different wraps, wheels and general tinkering.

My questions:

1. Which engine to go for, 2.7 or 3.4? I've heard the 2.7's feel underpowered - if I went for this version are there tuning options available? Currently drive a 993, which feels fast enough.

2. Is there a nice Sports exhaust for these models which is not prohibitively expensive?

3. Is the Tip box a nice one?

Unless you can't drive a manual, definitely don't buy a Tip!

The 2.7 is no slouch and should feel reasonably quick compared with most 993 (maybe not Turbo, RS etc!!!) you just need rev it out a bit more (which is more fun than just using a low rev wave of torque anyway). They drive much better on 17" wheels (with less grip) than many of the monstrosities they are shod with!

The 2.7 is also significantly less prone to self destruction in 987.1 than the 3.4....

key thing about the early 2.7's is they only have the 5 speed box - 6 speed was an optional extra with PASM.

Not a problem around town, but on a motorway - 6th would have been really useful just to drop the revs a little.

Sold the 993 coupe and converted the money into school fees.
Have a 993 Targa which will soon have to go too.

Can't be totally Porsche-less and I enjoy tinkering/changing appearances, so I thought of an early Cayman. Matt Orange, lowered with Black wheels. I'm not sure if I'm into high-revving anymore - my wife had an MX5 2-litre and you had to thrash it all the time to get it going. The 993's are pretty torquey and I like that so maybe I need a 3.4. My thoughts are to sell the Targa, but a cheaper Cayman (12-14k) and have a bit put aside if things go pear-shaped.

How's things going with the targa? I've had similar thoughts & seeing as the targa is my preferred variant I've been keeping eye on the classifieds but there doesn't seem to be much doing. My reason for starting the other thread is just looking around at what ropey old ste you get for your money these days. I quite fancy a fixer upper but the memories of travelling the country looking at old turds doesn't exactly fill me with glee.

A mint 996 at £15k and the rest in the bank appeals a lot more. Not to mention being safer when the bubble bursts
