Problem with Exhaust/Compressor

Yesterday, after a 20 minute drive, I noticed a compressor-like noise (bit like you get when you are in a tyre shop), much louder than the engine noise when idling and continuous. It seems that the exhaust system has a compressor which it uses to warm up the cats when starting from cold, which is meant to cut out quite quickly, and it may be that this compressor did not cut out. Has anyone experienced this problem?
Did you have your air con on at the time? Do you get an occasional whooshing/hissing noise from the air vents in the cabin? If yes to these, try turning the air con off next time you hear the noise and see if that makes it stop.
I had a similar noise and it was due to low gas in the air con system which was causing the compressor to groan. 2 new condensers on the warranty, and then a re-gas sorted it.
Edit: Just noticed you said much louder than the engine at idle. My noise wasn't that loud but was noticable, so may be a different issue.

Many thanks. Mine really was a very loud continuous compressor-like noise, which drowned out the engine at idle.I had a similar noise and it was due to low gas in the air con system which was causing the compressor to groan. 2 new condensers on the warranty, and then a re-gas sorted it.

If the noise varied with engine RPM's this could be a number of things, but probably not a compressor or the secondary air injection pump. It could be a noisy water pump, accessory drive idler/tensioner roller bearing or possibly something inside the engine.
If the noise did not vary with engine RPM's it could be the secondary air injection pump got triggered for some reason (though this is based on my info rare), or a noisy A/C radiator fan, cabin vent fan, or an engine compartment fan.
It could also arise from a refrigerant problem with the A/C system as ChipAndCheese covered.
Regardless, you need to get the car to the shop ASAP and get this properly diagnosed. No noise ever got better by running the engine more. I would advise you to flat bed the car to a shop. If the noise is say a failing water pump or something even more seriously wrong, you avoid the risk of collateral damage by avoiding driving the car, even running the engine.
