Hi guys, your thoughts please...

Returning to my car a couple after a couple of weeks, it refused to start. Thinking it was a flat battery I called AA home start and one of the guys came around. However, having done all the necessary battery checks, which seemed to be in good condition, he did some other tests and concluded that the starter motor had gone...that is, there was a clicking sound when you turned the ignition key.

Now, having the AA collect my car the following morning, they dropped it off at my local Porsche Centre, where the diagnosis was indeed the starter motor. Quoting over £1k inc VAT to do the work, I was pleased to have a warranty....but, it wasn't a Porsche one...it was from The Auto Group (TAG), their 'Ultimate' cover...so, I thought it would still be alright.

However, they weren't prepared to cover the official Porsche costs, but sourced a Bosch starter from 9apart...I've phoned them and they say it's manufactured to the same spec as the official Porsche item, but in Bosch box...

Can anybody shed any light on Starter motors for a 996 turbo, as the Porsche Centre refuse to fit a 'non-Porshe' part?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers, Scott.

One and the same, but no doubt.. But without a typical OEM branding super price premium slapped on top.

Thanks Pete...but how can we be sure it's one in the same? Don't want to put an inferior part on it?

Bosch are one of the worlds largest specialist in genuine electrical components for car manufactures worldwide and I'd be astounded if they don't make the starter and alternator for Porsche

No issues with quality IMHO

IIRC Bosch design the engine ECU for Porsche as well!

The OEM unit is indeed a Bosch.

I removed mine recently (thread on here somewhere) had it cleaned up, painted and refurbed with new brushes and solenoid for £60 !
If you can get underneath the car it's a 15 min job to remove and replace.

ECP will supply the Bosch at £350ish.

I am having starter issues on my 996TT, I am keen to take it out and get refurbished. I am struggling to find any information on the best way of doing it. Someone has referred to a DIY on Pistonheads but I can't find it. Any help would be appreciated.
