Help with stereo sound in 996 C4S
Discussion
Hello
Apologies if I'm being stupid and I'm sure that if I keep digging, the answer is on the forum somewhere.
But I've just bought a 2003 996 C4S and words can't describe how poor the sound is from the stereo. There is no bass or depth at all and it sounds like listening to a set of earphones that have been put in a bucket.
The car doesn't seem to have any door speakers but has what look like factory grills fitted and it does not have the Bose upgrade or anything more than 2 standard speakers in the back.
I need to work out a few things:
Is this normal and are they all this bad ?
Can I just buy some speakers and fit them in the doors - assuming that I can get compatible ones
Will the cables be in the doors or will I need to run them from the amp ?
I'm not looking for super-sound, just something that I can actually bear to listen to.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I thought the C4S came with the BOSE upgrade as standard... No?
All the cars I looked at before buying mine had it fitted. Front and rear speakers, tweeters on the dash and a bloody great sub behind the rear seats.
As above... If you've got PSE then open the windows and don't worry about the stereo!

If you just have speakers in the dash top and rear sides then one option is to replace the standard paper done speakers with something more modern. The speakers are attached to the back of the grills in a unique porsche manner so fitting aftermarket speakers is not straight forward.
One easy way is the alpine upgrade from JMG which includes their own mounting conversion kit. It is plug and play so no mods are needed to the grills or the car wiring.
I have these front and rear in my 996 and they are a massive improvement on the standard speakers. Still lacks real bass, but for the size of speakers they are a really easy and worthwhile upgrade.

I've done the Alpine speaker upgrade using the jmg kit also, works well, doesn't get you the full on bass but at least allows a bit of a crank up. http://www.jmgshop.com/9xx---porsche-boxster--996-...
I also replaced the fibre optic amp with another unit as my one was causing distortion which further limited volume even with the new speakers.
Another upgrade I'd recommend (if you want phone/mp3 integration) is http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400813041765 this works miles better than Denison or mobridge etc
