Is the 996 Turbo the best Porsche 911 ever?

If price is a factor, which he states in the article, he is right. For the money you can buy one for, they are not beatable. We did the 996 Turbo looks thing here and the 993 lost on votes fair and square (drops keyboard and runs into the Friday evening mist).
996 Turbo's are superb, impossible to get anything like the performance, practicality or pleasure you get from a 996 Turbo without paying lots more money. Had mine for two years now and will be keeping for at least another 2 years! After speaking with some Porsche specialists recntly the consensus of opinion is the 996 turbo prices have already bottomed out and are now slowly but strongly moving up.

Definitely from a bangs for buck and tuning potential point of view.
There so many indies out there specialising in the 996 turbo and its mechanicals that it's relatively cheap to maintain.
Still can't get over those headlights, so me the 997 turbo hits the spot. I really like the look of the 991 GT3, but the 991 turbo with its strange looking rear end and air intakes really needs a make over.

Best 911's I've had by far, on my third (had GT2/GT3/930/964 TURBO)
Especially when tweaked.
Anybody who says a sorted car is boring needs help.
The only 911 I've owned that was better IMO was the GT3. The older turbo's were boring and terribly slow in comparison and more expensive to maintain.
In terms of values if that's your motivator they are rising slightly, this doesn't bother me as I use in all weathers and just enjoy the car.

had a very sorted 996 turbo for a year, found it the most boring 911 I have owned. Did euro trips, track days etc.
Sold it and bought a GT2 and kept it for 3 years and 30k miles. Used it properly and the difference between the two cars is massive. A proper drivers car when sorted, like the GT3.

Its a very capable 911 for the majority drivers and appeals on price and usability.
There is a reason its the price it is now, and thats not because its the greatest 911 ever.
Because it's part of the 996 family and people don't like the headlights (subjective) and interior (having never been in one). There is a reason its the price it is now, and thats not because its the greatest 911 ever.

Yes liking turbo powered 911's is subjective I like both normally aspirated and blowers.
The modern turbo's (water-cooled) are so far removed in terms of slow and fast driving, far more capable and I'm not just talking straight point and squirt The 930 I owned, a sorted 89 5 speed was terrible (I guess you have to be a fan to appreciate these)and the 964 turbo (poor mans 3.3 I hasten to add
was as bad) both low mile cars and well fettled. The 7 and the 6T are just better cars all round.
So for me in the real world in all weathers and been reasonable practical it is the best 911 ever for smiles/value per buck and the specialist who I sold my GT2 too. to get back into the 996 turbo totally agreed.
Take yesterday roads were wet and salty I was out in mine with 550+ ponies felt as safe as houses, never felt that confidence in an early turbo or a GT2 much as I love the latter.
