997 not starting, dashboard flickers, warning msgs, clicks

On way back from London last night I stopped at the services and when I came out the 997 c2s would not start...
No turn over at all, electrics & dashboard went doolally flickering and flashing a range of warning messages, making clicking sound. Lights also came on and off...
About to ring the RAC when a chap came over who had noticed the problem. Checked terminals on the battery, all seemed fine. He then produced a portable jump starter and after a few seconds the engine struggled into life.
I drove home and parked in the drive, turned off and car would not start, same problem as previously. Been out and about in for last few days, done about 600 miles and been fine up until then.
Had new battery about 3 years ago, always been a sluggish starter. It looks like the battery may have just failed, any thoughts appreciated. I will call Porsche recovery later this morning.
Finally a big thanks out to the service station saviour who got me back on the road in the pouring rain!

Check you're getting minimum 14 volts from your alternator. You should have ~14.5 volts at your battery with the engine running, turn on lights heated rear and heaters and see if it drops much. The number of people I see that change battery because the alternator is dying and unable to keep up with the demands of lighting, heating etc is silly.
