Porsche latest alloy wheel designs....

Following on from forum chats with others on the latest wheel design offered by Porsche, it's had me think about their current alloy wheel designs and the ones in the past.

Some have said the latest alloys are very 'unporsche like' in there design etc.

What do you think? Unporsche like? If so, what is a proper Porsche design?

My feeling is that Porsche have always offered a varied selection of design that fit the style of that time...i.e. telephone dials were very Porsche in the eighties etc....

I dont know what the fuss is about.

Out of a dozen designs I'll like a selection of them, same now as it was 20 years ago.

That's exactly my thoughts. Obviously the Fuchs are a classic design, but I am not sure they fit modern Porsches that well.

I've always just specc'd what I like...and not tried to go retro. I am sure the whole diamond cut and black finish will pass, but that's generic of the time...just like the design of the whole car. It places itself in the era it was designed in.

The design is somewhere between fashion and function. I spoke with a product manager for Porsche GB last time i was at the silverstone event place. He explained that the wheels on all porsche are designed as fans, they are designed to suck air from under the car where it is not needed, helping to stabalise the car at speed and cool the brakes.

However IMO the most recent turbo II wheels on the Cayenne/ Panamera are sexy as hell.

I think the 991 GT3 wheels are among the best that Porsche have ever made, the dish on the rears is just brilliant. I think it's a real shame when people spec black wheels as it hides the glorious design.

most of the latest wheels look like aftermarket creations straight out of a techart catalogue, enormous and bling bling design, they will be adding spinners next

I meant they had offered different dseigns over the years...not necessarily lots of different options at any one time.

I do take your point and agree to some degree. I remember specc'ing my 987 Boxster when it first came out and thinking 'Hmmm, the wheel options don't look as Porsche like as the 986's'.... I went for the 19" Lobster claw design (think they were called Carrera S??)...nothing like any previous Porsche wheel, but I liked them all the same.

I am sure if you took the badge off the current Carrera S wheel, it would look Porsche like (it's very similar to the GT3 wheel from the 996 gen 2) and the Sport Techno wheel has a hint of the 'Twists' design...would you not agree??

I wish they would have had the 997/987 Carrera Sport wheels as an option on the current range... I loved those wheels!

I suspect some would argue it's a dated design now but would love to see them on a 991 or 981 to see if they go together!
