Some here may have noticed on other threads that I'm giving serious consideration to buying my first ever brand new Porsche (brand new any car for that matter!). Current front runner is a fairly tricked out Boxster GTS (something like this, I personally always enjoy looking at other people's specs! http://www.porsche-code.com/PF11J593 ), and I've also just been having a play on the configurator and managed to get a lightly specced vanilla 991 C2 to a sensible price using the entry level less-is-more philosophy with just a few choice options - £81k if anyone's interested, http://www.porsche-code.com/PFGNH555

Now I haven't really been following the whole Porsche going turbo engined thing so I may well be wrong, but my understanding is that all of the standard B/C/911 range will be FI in about a year's time? It's not that I don't think the future turbo ones won't be great, I'm sure they will, but if I'm going to order a new sports car and tick that "life" box that we've probably all at least considered if not actually done, FI doesn't feature for me. So basically, if I don't order a car in the next few months, will I lose out on my opportunity to order a new Porsche exactly how *I* want it? Rather than giving it "serious consideration" with a bit of umming and ahing, should I be pulling my finger out, definitely making it happen come hell or high water and potentially stretching budget to a last "simple" and "basic" driver's 911? Or should I still be on a mission, but saving some cash, and getting a top spec (for me) BGTS?

This coming year feels like a bit of a watershed moment to me, anyone else getting that feeling?

Or have I completely misunderstood and my turbo fears are unfounded?! hehe

Don't buy a GTS. Three UK dealers have separately told me the new Boxster Spyder replacement will be announced in March / April around the time of the Cayman GT4. I would at least wait for that then decide...

The Boxster's value have gone down in recent years. A/C Porsche's have gone up, and look to be holding up well in the current climate.

People who were holding back, waiting for a certain model to drop may have found the car they now want is out of there reach. This is due to values going up in the classic car market in general.

A example now is the 996 Turbo around 30k its a lot of car a Boxster some of the later models very cheap excellent value for money.

Sooner or later if you want a certain car you have to make a choice. Who knows how the market will go next year?

IMO the A/C 911's will still hold higher prices, and the 996 Turbo will start going up. If I was buying a Porsche now, its a good bet to hold its value. You would not lose on it if you buy the right one.
If I had waited back in 07 till later on, I could never have bought my dream car now
the value's today would have made it out of my reach. In 07 I could afford to buy it, then as the price was right for me.

Buy the car you really want, and enjoy it and come what may?

slightly obscure post - but largely accurate - there's always x/y/z round the corner in a/b/c years time that will be incrementally better, but there's also the problem that it might be out of your reach until c years... at which point you'll be back to finding that j/k/l will be just around the corner in r/s/t years.

if you want something, can afford it and like it - buy it now smile

The death of the naturally aspirated 911 is a myth , don't believe the hype .

sorry - didn't mean to offend, the reference to a/c pork just seemed slightly incongruous with the topic of new car purchases?

it's highly possible i've missed your point though?

I take your point and from your postings here and elsewhere it's clear that you err much more on the old school/mechanical feel side of driving thumbup My car history has always been on my profile for all to see and I'd like to think it's covered a decent amount of the more traditional driving experience which is what I have traditionally felt I lean to as well. I guess that because I'm fortunate to run several cars which cover different bases, the idea of a cutting edge new performance luxury sports car, chintzy and all smile, appeals to me quite a lot now as it's an area I've never delved into.

I've not driven a 991, but I have had 40 mins or so in a 981 Cayman GTS (SS, PDK, Carmine Red w/ GTS Interior pack) and it was a modern, very nice place to be. As far as drive goes, it seemed very good, or as much as you can tell from 40 mins in the outskirts of London. Frankly, I think this is where magazine road tests etc come in so useful as it's unlikely you'll get the chance to properly explore the car's ability on a test drive, so having pretty much everyone say unanimously that "something is great" with useful descriptors that match my preferences is enough for me. I've not driven a 991, but I am aiming to organise a drive of a Boxster GTS in the next couple of weeks, so might try and get some time in a manual Carrera as well.

I would avoid buying a 991 until they completely sort it, which they will, its just a question of time. If you don't need the seats it's just not worth the money as things stand.

The BGTS is the best car you can buy new from Porsche at the moment. The Cayman is indeed awesome but you can't beat that little button to the left for taking the roof off.

So, no time like the present, what are you doing here reading internet pages? get down to the dealer.

Both steering and brake pedal felt fine to me. Maybe the brakes were a bit off on the one you drove?

Passive SS doesn't appear to be available for 991s, even the Carrera (GT)S.

Ref the wheels, I think the 19"s would work, probably one of those times where you need to see it in the flesh - a bit like the espresso interior.

As an aside, I do think he 3D view is a very good thing to have on the configurator, especially if your laptop screen is a good one, rather impressed with it.
