I hate to say it, but check back issues of 911&PW or GT Purely Porsche and i'm sure you'll see a buyer's guide for the 964 from within the last 12 months.
These buyers guides do tend to be reasonably comprehensive, plus you take take it with you when you go and have a look and use it as a reference...

I don't have any of these mags, hence me putting a post on here.
The main problem areas are with engine oil leaks, original flywheel and a distributor problems which can seize an engine. None of these can be noticed from a test drive, you need to know what you're looking for. Best bet is to pay an indipendent porsche specialist to give the car a pre-purchase inspection which costs around £100, they can test for cylinder leaks, that sort of thing.
Bear in mind that an engine top-end rebuild can cost £4000, but is only worth doing if the engine is guzzling oil, leaking everywhere or down on performance.
Other than that, my advice is to buy based on the condition of the car, how it drives and service history, not mileage.

Both publications have back issues departments you can access from the web - pick the magazine, put in your details, and three or four quid (and a couple of days) later you have a comprehensive guide to what to look for.
There's also Dr. Alex's 964 buyers guide right here on PH:

adrian crawford does a good 964 buyers guide as a downloadable purchase. the layout is a bit messy in places but the info is very sound, very comprehensive and comes from someone with decades of experience in sourcing porsche. lots of jpegs to illustrate his points too.
you can purchase it via his website
