I have bought a Porsche charge o matic battery charger to look after the battery during the winter months which plugs into the cigarette lighter. The problem is that the cigarette lighter only works with the ignition on, so has anyone had to change the wiring so as the lighter works without the ignition and if so is it an easy job? (It's a 996 C2 '2000')

I'm sure the lighter works permanently on my Boxster! I'll need to go and check now...

Where did you buy the charge-o-mat?

You're all correct - the change from switched to permanent live in the cigarette lighter was made by porsche in 2002 (if memory serves me correct).

Hi mate. Have had the same problem as you on my new zealand new RHD 993. Have had the charger replaced with the latest one and still an issue. Not and issue with LHD cars it seems - thus everything you read says it should work!

I took the car to an auto electrician and they tried to by pass teh wiring but they were not happy with some relays which still go current (now all the time the ignition was off). End result was that I left it stock and used an adaptor which camps onto te battery posts. To be honest I wouldnt have bought it if I had known this as its certainly not as pratical as I would have liked.

If you find a soloution please let me know ....

Cheers

Have the same problem with my 993. OPC can wire up the car so there's a permanent feed to the cigar lighter for about £50. Or I think you can get an adapter for your Porsche trickle charger which has crocodile clips on for conecting to the battery - if you take this option remember to close the luggage compartment fully as the interior light stays on (and drained my battery)
