Looks like it comes from China, I guess a clone of the real deal. Comes with CD-ROM...

Would be nice to read codes and revs etc off my 996T, and even see what codes my poor old 964 is harbouring - but haven't quite found the urge to pay £250 for Durametric. Also the durametric enthusiast kit is sold as one that covers 993-996-997 OR a separate one that covers 964, not both - this kit 'claims' to read both.

Anyone?

When I bought Durametric, I think I paid extra for the 964 support. The 964 part is a different cable - it's a few years since I've had my 964 but from memory I think the 964 cable plugged into the normal durametric cable and then connected to the car.

I don't see how the one in your link can work with 964 unless there is another part they don't show - because I thought the physical connector was different from the later cars?

The Chinese copy, if it works at all, will only allow you to use an early version of the Durametric software which is why it comes with the software on CD Rom. You cannot for example download version 6 from the Durametric website and use it with your copy cable.

Yes you can!

Looks like you've answered the question then. But that wasn't the case historically; the clone cables would only work with early software versions.

Back to the question...the cable as supplied will only read cars with the OBD2 connector...996, 997 etc. You need the round adapter for earlier cars.

I bought one for £20, promptly threw it in the draw and bought a genuine professional cable instead.

I'm on my 3rd Pro cable! I buy one, use it, decide I probably won't need it again so sell it and shortly after realise I should have kept it!!! They're always useful and I won't be selling it again. My latest one should be arriving Monday!

I bought one for £20, found it useful and actually reset the airbag light with it.

You can also delete error codes, read a lot of live and stored performance data off it, etc etc.

It's a previous version of Durametric.

It works as long as you know the limitations, major one being XP only unless you install the Durametric V6 drivers then you can get it to work on Win8 and presumably previous versions of Windows too.

I'm not sure re using Durametric V6 in its entirety though, I thought you needed a specific proprietary cable for that which is why the clones are always supplied with an older version of Durametric.

Useful tool if you are not willing (or needing) to commit to anything special.

Care to elaborate? Is it as simple as that?

Thanks for info - I am happy to compromise a little for 20 quid - slightly surprised it even works at that. I guess I don't need updates if it is just for my 6T, XP is no problem, and not reading the 964 isnt a deal breaker either.

If it takes rev-range data off the ECU (does it?) its also worth a shot, as I have a mate looking at 6Ts..(How to scare a seller, turn up with a laptop and obd cable..)

You can update some of the Durametric clone cables, but most of them are bricked if you go beyond around version 5.0.6 of the Durametric software. Others are bricked way before that. So as Clint would say "Do you feel lucky?" They usually come with V3.1 software, which is hopelessly out of date, and very limited on what you can do on a 9x7 onwards. OK-ish for 9x6s though.

If you want something that will read and reset fault codes, and read live data, from all the control modules of everything from a 9x6 up to a 9x1, including Panameras and Cayennes, take a look at the iCarsoft i960 hand held scanner. About £100. It won't reset service indicators, but is a useful tool for diagnostics, and resetting things like airbag lights. (No affiliation, by the way).

Yes it does. Just have a stiff drink beforehand!

Yes, here's the recent thread where I linked to the one I bought for 20 Euros (so under £20):

It came with a disc but I don't think it worked very well so I ended up on Durametric's website and downloaded their software and it worked OK with that cable. I don't remember if there was a choice of software (or which I chose if there was) but I only downloaded it once and it was all quite straightforward.

That's great, good to know, no idea which mine is but no harm in trying I suppose. Although I'm well served as is truth be told and have not used the kit for ages.
