Just pondering this, but what are thoughts on a 997 GTS vs 997 GT3 with added comfort?

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/p...

I've heard of rear seats, seat belts and kids chairs being put in the back of the GT3 and I think the 2wd setup of the GT3 has a big front boot like the C2S - not sure on the GTS?

Is this ruining a GT3?

I would guess the GT3 costs more to run but won't depreciate like the GTS.

Keep changing my mind on the next car:

997.1 Turbo - don't like the engine/exhaust noise and funny sticking out front fogs or fussy wheels
997 GT3 - maybe too harsh and no rear seats. KW suspension could be added with rebound adjustment?
997 GTS - the obvious choice
997.2 C2S - not much engine/exhaust noise

To add - the reason for this question is that I like the look of the GT3, the performance, the exclusivity and it could be a long term weekend summer car if I add a very sensible family car to the fleet. The GT3, however would need to carry 3 people up to 6 times a year for no more than 100 miles.

A man can never have enough GT3/RSs... wink

Have you driven a GT3? Suspension is not firmer than the sport suspension on a stock 997. Clutch is heavier. That's about it. No downsides for everyday driving for me

Yep. I picked up a 997 Gen1 GT3 a few weeks ago. You can mince around in one of them quite happily - all day every day.

The GT3 has a small front boot like a C4 or Turbo I'm afraid. Otherwise I never found mine too hard for everyday use, but the very heavy clutch was a bit annoying in traffic.

997 GTS is based on the widebody chassis.

IF your worried about resale values on the GT3 option, buy the carpet and other bits from a crashed C2 and put the originals in the loft/storage.

...turbo wheels can be changed, as can exhaust systems on the turbo and Carrera...

I think it depends on your use.

I had and loved a 996.2 GT3 however I was finding less and less opportunity to drive it, I agree with the people who say you can mince around in them or even do long journeys easily. More and more though I was finding that the only chance I'd get to drive it would be when the wife was with me and she just did not like being in it, found the buckets uncomfortable and the car too noisy. Consequently it was hardly being used.

I sold it six weeks ago for a 997 GTS. Firstly if I won the lottery tonight and didn't have to work I would be out to buy another GT3 tomorrow, they are so utterly sublime to drive when you're on your own. However overall I'm getting more enjoyment from the GTS as I drive it more and its a very fine car. I read Jack's write up of his experiences with his in the latest GT magazine and he is spot on with the way the controls work.

Just to give a balanced perspective on the missus whilst she doesn't like GT3's (at least those with buckets) she does run her own Boxster so its not all bad.

If you drive the car predominantly on your own or you think your other half will be fine with it go for the GT3, if you think you might have the same experience as me then you're hardly making a bad decision with a GTS.

Regards
Fred

Hi, I have driven 997 gts only once and 997.1 gt3 with rear seats a few times. Plus since since the beginning of the month I own a 997.2 C2S. IMHO GT3 (and in part turbo) is a very special car, able to deliver in every drive the kind of thrills that you won't get from the other versions. If you can cope with the lower and more pronounced chin and with the heavier clutch (you get used very soon, it is nothing compared to manual ferraris for e ample) then I would go for it. The rear seats are usable for small trips, if I am not wrong however You get just the cushion, there is no back....

GTS is beautiful, I love it's wide flanks, the wheels and the alcantara but at the end is a better and nicer carrera.

Thanks for the replies and suspect I will have a similar experience to Fred.

Regarding the ride, this is probably the only thing that is a show stopper. I have a 997.1 C2S and with the sports suspension on, it's ridiculous. I've had fully adjustable suspension on an E46 M3 before - on fully hard it's still not as harsh. With sports suspension on, it makes even my old 968 seem like a Mercedes. Yes yes I'm getting old and quite like to mince around :-).

For what you want a standard 997.2 C2S sounds a better bet.

The 997.2 should hold it's value due to the more reliable engine, lower number produced. It's also a good saving on a 997 GTS (or 997.1 GT3) which should give you the opportunity to add an after market exhaust if you need more noise.

I'd also like the engine, thats really what I'd like - a 997 GTS 2wd manual with a GT3 engine :-)

I need higher revs in my life than a Carrera engine

I'm really enjoying my GTS. It has the -20mm Sport Chassis, 2WD, manual.

I've just installed a TPC Racing DSC PASM module for the suspension. It's a really nice piece of kit. The car feels more compliant more of the time in its softest setting but still he wonderful body control. It also gives the PASM 3 settings instead of the standard 2.

The engine, while not a Mezger, is still a nice unit. The powerkit that is standard on the GTS (one of the main reasons that it was such a bargain) gives it 408bhp and raises the red line a few hundred rpm as well. The way it pulls and sounds from 6500-7500rpm is pretty special.

Sound-wise you also get the switchable Sports exhaust as standard and a £700 SharkWerks bypass pipe and it suddenly has a very raucous voice with the flaps open.

As an everyday proposition that always feels that bit more special than a standard Carrera but without the drawbacks (splitters, anyone??) of a full-blown GT car, the GTS makes a convincing case for itself.

Fantastic pitch, I think I'm sold! Didn't realise the rev limiter was raised. Nice.

That it looks so good with the widebody rear end is just a bonus wink
