Stupid me

I have just put my car in for its annual warranty extension and they have come back to tell me that my new front tyres are not N rated so they will not put a new warranty on the car until I have the front tyres replaced.

In December I ordered a pair of Bridgestone Potenza 235/35/19 from ATS. I very very stupidly did not check whether they were N rated. So now I have to buy another pair of the same size tyres. . A £500 mistake!

So, I have a pair of Bridgestone Potenza 235/35/19 with 6.5mm tread. Anyone interested? They can be collected from Porsche Byfleet is that is convenient.

Sorry to hear. To be honest this sounds like a ridiculous reason from their side, but I guess it's tough to walk away when you (or myself included) want to renew warranty.

So you could save c£1500 and run without a warranty? I think I'd do that, but I don't claim to have a crystal ball, I'm just weighing up costs and risks, so you may conclude differently.

I'd get on to ATS and complain to them. Let them argue the toss with Porsche.

Would it be most cost effective to have an after-market warranty?

Could you not buy the new tyres and get the warranty, while keeping the ones you have now and fitting them when the new ones wear out?

Meanwhile, does anyone know if two 19 inch front tyres will fit a 997? If so where will they fit?

It's £1500 for a reason. From past experience the car IS going to break/wear out stuff in excess of that every year. Why do you think a VW warranty is only £400 for 3 years?

Good luck with eBay - I've tried selling a full set of N-rated Bridgestones for a 997 with no luck!

I think you'll get one in the back if you lower the seats and the other on the front seat. Do you really want to do this though? Guildford are normally happy to hang on to my part used tyres for a couple of days until I can go back in a "sensible" load lugger.

They'll fit on the front of a Gen1/2 Boxster/Cayman too so list it correctly.

Been through exactly the same with a local tyre place, luckily they replaced the rears with N rated tyres and they knew they had to be N rated, when they replaced the fronts they didn't fit N rated tyres, my warranty was being extended the next week, failed for the same reason.

I contacted my local tyre place, owner went mad with the guy who ordered them, replaced them FOC.

Exactly.

Like I said earlier, contact ATS - they're the professionals and hence liable for fitting the wrong tyres.

Given the wear and tear exclusion list on the Porsche warranty, which to my cost, I have had to read up on twice recently, I think the cost of the warranty + the two tyres in your back pocket to deal with any required repairs would be a better investment..

The official Porsche warranty is pretty similar to a back street car dealers in the way it weasels out of paying for anything.

But if he didnt ask specifically for N rated bridgestones (Thats how I read it) then how is ATS liable. They dont have to fit N rated rubber to porsche by law. Its only for the warranty. They were happy to fit Non N rated to my GT3.
