Walter Rhorl on the new gen engines

He is quite frank... I wonder what the Porsche PR machine will have to say.

At least it's not a four-cylinder turbo like in the next Boxster. That sounds like a Volkswagen Beetle, I'm not kidding you! I tell the guys, 'You're joking with this sound, right?'

By the time this comes out, the sound will be 'right'. Enough to sell anyways.http://jalopnik.com/real-talk-from-walter-rohrl-on...

How false the symposium crap sounds in reality, we shall see.
I heard a new Cayman the other day, all those dramatic pops and bangs sounded quite fake IMO but magazines rave about the sound.
I guess they will make the engine feel like an NA engine as much as they can and then fill in the blanks with the synthesised exhaust sounds.
Hope the GT4 sounds good!

The Cayman GTS sounds properly embarrassing to my ears. I would feel like a right tI guess they will make the engine feel like an NA engine as much as they can and then fill in the blanks with the synthesised exhaust sounds.

t driving one.The new 4 cyl engine will sound f
king awful but get good reviews. I think I may be getting old.So the new base 911 will fly, when driven in the lower half of the rev range, precisely because of the turbo...and for most people that will be a massive bonus. It'll be sold mainly (possibly only) with Auto gearbox...it will be very relaxing to drive and slightly cheaper to own...and for most people that will be a massive bonus.

Porsche have been using turbo technology for nearly 50 years, and building racing and sportscars for more than a century. What makes you think they won't be able to make the next gen 911 a satisfying and engaging sportscar?SS7

I don't think even Porsche can overcome those problems and make it much fun at all, to be honest.
It will certainly not be a sportscar on any sensible definition. It might be a tolerably sporty GT.

Because the application of turbocharging as fundamentally changed. It was originally used for out and out power and was exciting due to the lag on/off sudden whoosh power delivery.SS7
Now, its being used for VERY different reasons. Its now all about efficiency and downsizing, with a small turbo being used in a very different way to make up the shortfall of power for little cost, fuel wise.
Go and drive a 3 cylinder 1.0 Focus Ecoboost.

Why does a turbo car have to have to torque curve of a 2l family saloon? And why does Kawasaki think 911 buyers are less discerning than he is?

Because that it how you get good emissions test results. The torque curve of a 991 Turbo looks very similar to the torque curve of a 2.0 Ford Ecoboost.
And why does Kawasaki think 911 buyers are less discerning than he is?
How do you know how discerning I am? I love Porsches for the steering and handling capability. I'm not massively bothered about power level, or even how that power is generated, including the noise generated. I'm happy once I have reasonable control over the power delivery, Porsche don't have to offer super sharp or super fine control. I'm very confident Porsche will satisfy my needs.

The aplication of turbocharging is the same as it's always been. more power from a smaller capacity. Older turbo applications made less power per litre than current ones, and the current ones have much wider power bands. Newer turbo technology is a different world to the old slow spooling apllications, and if anything boost levels have gone up.Now, its being used for VERY different reasons. The 1 litre ecoboost is an incredible engine, and i'd take one every day of the week over an old 1.6 or 1.8. More torque, more power, no lag, and a great noise.
Try a 2tfsi VW engine. its an awesome lump.
Will a turbo effect the noise and character of a porshce. Definately.
Will it produce a more powerfull engine with more instant torque low down? Yes without a doubt.
Will it make the car faster? Yes.
will it make the car easier to drive quickly? Yes
Will it use less fuel/cost less to tax? yes
Will it still rev out to 7.5k rpm? yes
Will it sound like an air cooled bag of spanner? No thank god.
The only downside (not for me) is it wont sound the same.
Lots of upside, minimal downsides, and all in the aim of leaving some fosil fuels and an acceptable climate around for my kids, and their kids, so bring it on!

I'm sure Porsche are doing the right thing (realistically the only thing they can do) to continue selling new cars. Personally I won't be one of those customers but there's no doubt plenty of other people will (I'll try and avoid them at the pub
