£18,500 SL500 or £165,000 GT3

I was up near Chester to buy and drive back a new toy - a fully loaded SL500, with the 5.5l V8 which cost me £18,500
Cost new £92,500, 38,000 miles with full MB history. Drove like a dream
As I drove back in comfort etc I thought to myself is my 991 GT3 worth almost 10 times this car
Totally different car, totally different drive but it does show that there are great cars out there for not that much money

Old car in cheaper than new car shocker...
Some people would rather have a new GT3, others would rather have an SL500, Lotus Elise, Range Rover and BMW M5. I'm in the latter camp, but it doesn't surprise me that some people choose the former. If I didn't have parking for 4 cars then I'd spend more on one car.

To be honest..had a lot of cars and the SL 500 I wouldn't touch with a barge pole..worst car I have had for supposed quality that was really poor and Mercedes know that and don't care,all of them leak water and Mercedes openly said to me that if you buy one it will be fine if you garage it!!Totally subjective and no right answer but yes I have space for more than one car so off I go and buy more than one

I have to say I totally disagree but then you get good and bad with all cars , even Porsche I had a 2001 SL320 and enjoyed it and my initial thoughts on this one are very positive

Well my roof leaked so bad the dealer couldn't sort it and said it happens on all of them..best to sell it..3 year old/28k miles..dumped it and bought a Boxster s which is half the price new ...and way betterI had a 2001 SL320 and enjoyed it and my initial thoughts on this one are very positive

Great wafter, and amazing value, but horrendous bills when things go wrong (as they often do). I have a colleague who has spent nearly 15k on his in the last 3 years (thanks in the main to roof, gearbox and suspension problems) and it's only 7 years old.

Bieldside you are going to hate me for this . Whoever sold you the Merc did so at a profit of maybe a couple £1000's. If you purchased a GT3 at £165,000 you could make a handsome profit in a couple of months . Having said that I believe you have bought yourself a fabulous timeless piece of classic car. With what you have saved you could buy a house that could be let which would provide you with an income which in turn would pay for all your running costs whilst preserving your initial investment. It is worth thinking about.

I know the SL500 is not a Porsche but I am mightily impressed by the car after a few days of ownership
Not just the V8 power and gurgle from the sports exhaust but the little luxury touches
I consider it a real delight for the money
Could of course be a sign of getting old !
And as my GT3 is going to hit £200k by the summer it was free from the virtual profit ...,
