996turbo or GT2 steering wheel

Hi
has anyone out there modified the steering wheel with either of the following to enable more knee clearance or reach for a tall person .
1. 340mm steering wheel in alcantra OEM is 380mm
2. 55mm steering wheel extender
appreciate any feedback

I looked into this before I managed to move my seat back another 1", I spoke to Demon Tweeks, they had plenty of 350 steering wheels with the correct adapters / spacers etc to fit, and a device to remove the Air bag warning light.

Something I've been thinking about also. Is the GT2 wheel 340mm?

for seat adjustment everyone is directing me to Brey Krause but no suppliers in UK however demon tweeks have recoro side mount plates that allow seat position adjustment but they would like to know what model recaro seat Porsche used. How did you get the extra 1 inch.as the actress said to the bishop!
also the steering wheel that you installed does it allow did it come with an airbag or do the extenders allow retaining the air bag

no standard OEM is 380mm FVD do a unit with air bag in Alcantra size 340mm

Here was my reply on the GT2 thread re moving the seat back :

"I'm just over 6'2" and 230lbs and have a 996 turbo with sports seats. I could not get comfortable even with the seat right back, so took it out and had a look to see what could be done.
On the inner runner there is a pressed in stop which I drilled out giving me just over 1" more legroom, that and with removing some of the lumbar support inside the seat and I an now comfy "

I did not need to change the steering wheel after doing this, non that I looked at had air bags.

Got the link of manufacturer some high end racer in Sweden price is actually 650 so with smaller wheel it'll set me back a pretty penny but long term it'll be good
I,lol hang on until I have driven the car or at least sat in it

Hi James don't fit a smaller wheel for god sake - it will ruin the car. Small wheels are for small cockpits and just don't work. You will lose feel, and control and effort goes up massively with a small wheel. At worst you could end up in a hedge, they don't work on race cars or road cars, its a myth. Look at Mr Sennas cars - largest wheel he could possibly fit within the confines. Trust me on this..... Space it back as per Herr Slippydiffmeister suggests and you will be on like Donkey Kong, get those arms twirling.

Interesting ref the seating position. My comfort with leather buckets and tequipment cage does not go far enough back on max adgustment, we've tried all sorts, but my clubbie with the cloth seats (like yours) and the proper cage has an extra inch rearward or so making it perfect. will take a look when I get chance and suss out the differences.

well jonno i was just about to go for the 340mm wheel as it also sits closer to the driver so you reckon 40mm will spoil the car ok
im going to get prices for both options then really do my research i thank you for the advise and helping me out

It sup to you mate but I would strongly recommend against doing it (going to a smaller wheel that is). Last season I raced a Sports protoytype for a few races and one of the complaints I had with the car (based upon a good few years experience racing) was the size of the wheel leading to "lack of feel". Between Snett and Brands Indy I ordered the largest diameter race wheel (3 bolt fixing) I could, and went from 280 to 330 dia. At Brands I sat on the front row of the grid on a 44 sec lap....., the car was transformed with this one change. Likewise road cars with too small a wheel lose feel, the Noble M600 is a classic example. Porsche engineered the car for that size wheel, and I think we all agree they know a thing or two about engineering. The small wheel will feel mega as you potter off down the road, the car will feel dead sharp and race like. Then try making steering input to correct understeer to oversteer at high speed and you will miss the feel - big time.

I've got a spare 60mm OMP black spacer for use with Momo fitment steering wheels if you need. This will give your knees some room and the steering wheel in a better position, won't fit the OE steering wheel though.

Your obviously talking from experience which I appreciate. Jonno the gt3 has a 340mm steering wheel would you say from experience that this is related to the fact the gt3 is a less twitchy car to handle I,m new to gt2 haven't even driven a porsche at same time I'm home for a very short period and I want to be able to fit in the car
So far ordering the recaro side mounts which are multi position
And the centre console delete

Must recognize I enjoy the support on the GT 2 forums to what I experienced on the griff guess it's at the sharp edge of keeping the car and driver in one piece cheers to you all

I had a 997.1 GT3 for a while and the wheel felt smaller so I guess you're right. Needless to say I didn't like it, ok on track but not great for "playing" on the road....

thanks i reckon the extender is playing safe. is there anyway that you HAVE oem SLEEVED IN ALCANTRA AS IT DEFINITELY FEELS BETTER IN THE HAND
