Porsche owners, stereotypes and hate

Reading the 'porsche wave' thread I got wondering, is there a stereotypical Porsche owner?

Not only that but before I bought mine I had read about existing owners receiving stupid comments/not getting let of out junctions etc., but I've had the complete opposite.

I'm amazed and a bit perplexed at the amount of attention my humble Cayman receives, from both adults and children.

Driving slowly down the high street numerous people have given me thumbs up, waves, or pointed the car out to someone they are with.

I'll have owned it a year this summer and the only negative comment I received was some kid shouting from the pavement about how my car is a poor mans Porsche. I was quite impressed he could tell the difference but I didn't bother to ask him where his 911 was...

But other than that, everyone loves the Cayman.

I think the answer is no.

I think there is a stereotype of new Porsche owners, and I have no doubt that there are many of that type, but there are loads of other types too, especially as you get towards the older cars.

It's the same in all walks of life.

The main thing is you drive a Porsche and people think you are rich?

People always pre-judge you?

That is what I have found so far.

You have a Porsche, on your driveway a quote for some work goes up.

People think how does he afford that car?

Its the same with people, you look at someone and you make up your own mind about them.

Without even talking to them?

As for thinking Porsche owners are all rich, I had a couple of quotes for rendering my house the other day. Here are the results:

Quote 1 - tatty old 2005 toyota verso on the drive but no porsche present; quote for work, £7850

Quote 2 - 997 turbo on the drive! no tatty old toyota present; quote for exactly the same work £17.512!!

Now on the second quote am I dealing with a seriously more qualified workman or a chancer loading a Porsche premium??

Get a third quote and see, quote 2 could just be pricing himself to high as hes not interested in the work but is being 'polite' in replying.

Alt, quote 1 might be stupidly low and they expect 'variation costs' after contract award/not quoted for something that needs doing and before you know it, your near quote 2's no.

With three Porsche's over several years I haven't had much in the way of envy/bad reactions. I came back once to my 993 & someone had kindly gobbed all the door handle, another one was chewing gum on the bumper. It's mainly people wanting to 'race' you or take great pleasure in overtaking you. A classic (& very embarrassing) one was only this weekend. I had taken out a 997 C2S for a test drive; turning onto a dual A road in the outside lane I was undercut by a boy racer in a Corsa!!! Followed by an old 5 series billowing smoke desperate to get past me. I have had a few nice reactions though as well. Quite a few school lads putting thumb's up saying "nice car". The best was once in the 996 turbo I was making progress down a dual A road & noticed a speck in the distance in my rear view, suddenly it was level to me - a lambo gallardo. The chap put the thumb's up & flew past.

I tend to think most Porsches are such a common sight these days that unless you are a PH squared (petrolhead and pistonhead) most are unaware you may be driving something special. After all, a 911 looks largely like a Cayman looks like a Boxster from the front, even if the performance between models is chalk and cheese. Which to me, this wolf in sheeps clothing aspect is part of the appeal and what I tend to dislike about ownership of majority of Ferraris and the like.

Time was, when only Company bigwigs drove Jaguars.....clearly in the days when they were a 'premium' vehicle........laughable how things have changed and to a lesser degree this now applies to certain models of Pork.....although Stuttgart thankfully has continued to produce some truly unique and iconic cars and long may that continue....

I live up north and Porsche's are very rare.

I only ever see another one when I go down south, speaking of which when I was searching for my cayman the vast majority of the private sellers where from London.

There is some stereotype associated with Porsche. When I told a friend that I'd bought a 911 I soon received this text:

A bloke is getting out of his parked Porsche when a lorry smashes into the side of his car.
When the police arrive the Porsche driver is hysterical and screaming 'my car, my car, look what he's
done to my car!!! arrest him , arrest him!!!'
The copper replies 'you Porsche drivers are all the same- your arm has been severed off and all you care about
is your car??!!'
The driver started screaming 'oh my God , oh my God , my Rolex, where's my Rolex!!'

Your mate should be embarrassed at typing out a joke that's around 35 years old and not really that relevant now. For a start the watch would be a Panerai

Only in Wilmslow or Chester!

I do about 60 miles a day all over and I can't remember the last time I saw a 987 or 997, maybe a Cayenne or a 968 at best!

Dont get me wrong I see plenty of expensive rep mobiles and hyper hatches in Manchester but porsche? Definitely not.

I wear a Rolex. Hence maybe the joke......
Years ago I wore Panerai but since Richemont purchased the brand they have gone crap.

I know 3 people in the real world who drive Porsche's (other than myself). No clear pattern emerges:-

(1) 987 Boxster S. Owner is about 45 and very wealthy. He didn't know it was RWD and doesn't understand why I suggest that he get it serviced (or at least an oil change) more than once every 3 years.

(2) 981 Cayman S. Owner is about 35 and wealthy. He is getting rid of it because he has a young son (although his wife presumably has a car, so I dont really follow this). He has an order for a Macan DIESEL. I weeped.

(3) Cayenne Turbo. Owner is about 55 and wealthy. He is a massive car enthusiast and has loads of great sports cars over the years.
