A friend is looking to buy a 90s 911 however has made an observation with paperwork

On the cars he's viewed, the service invoices often only point a basic annual service of oil/filters and sometimes belt inspection
All other receipts point to either
fixing.... leaks, electrics,
replacing... window switches, perished rubber,
or modifying... exhaust, etc.

Is this normal for air cooled guys?
To not follow a strict service schedule and just have the oil and filters done at each service, not much else?

In fairness I can only thing of plugs, brake and transmission fluids in addition but don't know these types of cars well enough to advise him confidently

I'd expect to see an annual service each year - major one year, minor the next.

There may be additional items added on the yearly service invoice as additional work needed doing.

I'd also expect to see a number of additional invoices for additional jobs which have needed throughout its lifetime.

I often list these in a spreadsheet so I can go over all the important jobs done on my car without having to sort through the invoices each time - always helps when selling my cars.

Major will be a 24,000 mile service and minor will be a 12,000 mile service.

Example of the pricing for a 964 C2 at JZ Machtech

The 964 does not have hydraulic lifters, its valve clearances have to be adjusted at every major service I believe.

A 6k service is oil and filter,a 12k service includes valve clearances too. I think plugs are every 24k and air filters probably the same.

That aside, I wouldn't see a lot of wisdom in making a purchasing decision on a 21-26 year old car based on the paperwork, far more important to have its current condition checked out.

To the OP. Some of these cars are seeing such little mileage these days, that a major service is just overkill. My car covers about 1500 miles per year. I have it serviced every 12months. The oil is still like new when it is drained. Changing the plugs every other year would be pointless (at 3000 miles?). I have the brake fluid changed every other year, plus anything else that is necessary.

I agree with the last two posters. I would certainly advise you friend to get a full, independent inspection carried out before purchase.

As above, buy on current condition.

Remember that these cars are dry-sump with 11.5 litres of oil doing the rounds, so the oil *can* go for long periods and still function within spec., and note the schedule states that the filters should be changed every 'other' oil service.... this backs-up the fact that the oil is very unstressed. Of course you don't want the oil lying around for years in a low-mileage engine, as used oil is slightly corrosive.

Plugs will last for millions of years without issue, but due to bi-metallic corrosion you do need to change them every (we can argue here) five? years otherwise they may get stuck regardless of mileage.

Schedule (of important items)
Oil, air filter, pollen filters every 12k miles
Spark plugs and both oil filters every 24k miles
Fuel filter, gearbox and diff oils every 48k miles.

Recommended Yearly Maintenance - change engine oil.
Brake fluid - every 3 years.

Note for your amusement that the original service schedule book (at the top of the service stamps page) says:

'Have your car serviced every 12k miles.'

Only after Porsche got into financial trouble did the book get reprinted (or a small sticker was added to the early-printed books) to say:

'...or at least once a year'.
