ID3 tags and PCM 2.1 problem

I just collected my 987S Boxster yesterday, and I'm trying to get to grips with the audio - PCM2.1 with nav, CDC and Bose.
I've discovered that the in-dash CD player will play mp3 files, so I copied 61 tracks to a CD. About half of them display the track name, the other half just show a few weird characters.
Examining the tag data, I can see that the tracks that display properly just have tag2 set as ID3v2.3. The ones that don't display also have tag2 set as ID3v1.1.
Deleting the data from tag 1 made no difference, so I stripped all the tags, and recreated tag2 only (from the filenames) as ID3v2.3
Strangely, the same tracks as before displayed OK or as weird characters. The tag data and type looks the same for all the files, but some display OK, others don't!
Anyone got a solution to this?

It seems that the PCM2.1 remembers the CD contents. When I burnt the new CD with the same contents and folder name (but with the new tags), it just used the tag data from the old CD.
I burnt the CD again, but with a different folder name. Now, none of the files display the tag info, they are all weird characters!
Obviously the new tags are not in a suitable format for the PCM2.1, despite them supposedly being ID3v2.3
I need a filename to tag creator that will make tags that are compatible with PCM2.1

Think I've figured it out:
Use a tag stripper to remove all the tags. I did this on my Mac
Use mp3tag (on a Windows computer) to remake the tags from the filename. Make sure the options are set to only write ID3v2.3 tags, using ISO8859 codeset.
I think the important part is to use v2.3 tags and the ISO codepage, not UTF/Unicode. I got into this mess because I have used several different rippers over the years, and it looks like they do their own thing when it comes to how the tag is encoded. Most playback devices aren't bothered, but PCM2.1 appears to be very fussy!
I will probably fit a Dension Gateway eventually, but I want to make sure I can live with the other limitations and quirks of the Porsche unit before I spend the money.
